Lately i have been heading out the mouth of the Brisbane river and fishing the rock wall, mud island and around st Helena island in hope of getting my first snapper. I only have a little boat so the places i can fish are limited. I haven't had any luck, i really need advice on what to fish with and most importantly what is the best place for me to get one of these awesome fish. Any advice would be great. Thanks. :):)

Mate you are in the correct spots. Plenty of Snapper, mostly smaller 30-60cm models there. My advice, use Damiki armour shads, 3", in Skin Blue, Ox Blood or Gold mix on a 1/12 1/0 Jig Head. The lighter line the better, for getting the bite as well as the fun factor. I generally use 6-10lb. Its my go to in those areas and doesnt fail me much.

You must be fishing fairly shallow water Jarryd? Or waiting a while til it hits the bottom? When I'm chasing snapper in 5-8m of water I mainly use 1/4 jigheads and sometimes 3/8. Maybe I'm fishing too heavy? Will consider downsizing tomorrow if (or should I say 'when') I'm not getting many fish :P

Depends what the current is doing. But the spots are around that 5m mark. Doesnt take too long to get bottom.

Don't worry mate I am in the same boat (pardon the pun!). Keep persisting, like I am and like j have been told and you will eventually get the reward. Check out my previous posts as plenty of Bfo members have given me excellent advice on where to and how to following many failed trips!

Just wondering what size boat do u have?

its good to see im not the only one. My boat is only a tiny 3.5m, i can get to mud and st helena island easy, but when it blows up it can be a bit scary. lol. I will be getting an upgrade soon. I will look through your older posts, thanks for the advice. :-)

The bloke that wrote this www.fishing-mates.com/snapper/ has forgotten more about catching snapper on bait than most will ever know. Worth a look unless you want to go to the darkside :woohoo:

As was said the way the green zones are around St Helena give it a miss and wander down to Green Island or even Wello, Both are easily accessable from Wynnum, Manly or Wellington Point.

went out today before first light to the rockwall at the mouth of the brisbane river, fished until 8am and had no luck. (using baits and plastics). From there we proceeded to mud island, i got bitten off once, and we hooked up to heaps of little fish such as (tailor, bream, fingermark, squire). After we finished there we went back to the rockwall. (got back to rockwall about 12.20pm). Second cast with a big strip bait I landed a 54cm snapper. Not a big one but still a good eating size and a quality fish. Thanks to every one for the advice on catching them and i will continue to persist. :cheer: :cheer:
