Hey Guys,

Haven’t had a chance to post since Saturday’s fishing trip so decided now would be a good time. Well the plan was made on Friday to fish Harries Saturday afternoon and into the night. The weather looked not too bad so we fished into the high and just off it. I also brought along my friend Justin (sprintcardude) as I thought he’d like the opportunity. After fishing success last time we were at Harries, we were coming in confident. Left the ramp at around 3:00pm and went straight to the reef after no success using the cast net. Due to not being very familiar with the area, I wasn’t too sure where to cast but anyway. After we arrived at the reef, there were about 12 boats there already. We found that someone was already fishing our spot, anyhow we anchored within the regulations. We found that the anchor didn’t grab so we re-anchored-this time it grabbed. We caught a few pike which went into the bait tank to keep fresh and then the people moved from our spot so we went to anchor over there. The anchor didn’t even budge. We tried all the different angles but couldn’t free it up. So after wasting some time on it, we decided to stay put and cut at the end of the trip. I figured we were fishing no man’s land as we were a fair way off the mark. We persisted and continued to fish. We caught a few more pike and it was about an hour till the high. I decided to make a rig for a whole live pike. By the way, these pike were quite large. So with the pflueger salt and shimano t-curve the pike was rigged on 60lb leader and 5/0 circle hooks. 45 minutes went by without anything so I decided to check and re-cast. After that no more than 10 minutes and the salt screamed. I figured that a whole live pike eaten would most likely result in a jewie, so I knew they first inhale their bait then swallow it, so I let him run. Cleared the boat and then I got Justin to reel it in. After a good battle up came the fish. A monster Jew. Since not catching really anything that size, I was pretty pumped, also considering we were off the structure. Anyway on the brag mat, he measured 92cm! I was pretty stoked and so was the rest of the crew! We fished a little longer with a couple more livies out but nothing was doing, so we tried to move the anchor again but ended up cutting the rope. We were at the ramp by 11:00pm and home in bed by 12:30am. I gave the fish to Justin and his family as he caught it and it was his first real fishing trip. At the end of the day, I figured that at Harries (since we were going for snapper) to be successful with the reds you need to be right on the money so I rekon anchoring in front of the structure and fishing down it. This was the biggest fish caught with the boat so far and hopefully not the last! The sonar reading also improved after I had lowered it on the Friday night. As a rule of thumb, does the transducer have to be above the hull of can it sit slightly below it? And we were also pretty happy as the four times we have been out, we have always caught something! :P Anyways thanks for reading and hopefully we’ll get out soon again!

Cheers

Anthony

Well done mate. Thats a cracker jew.

Once you learn to fish harries properly you wont go anywere.

It took us a while to figure how to fish it properly.

I dont like fishing there at night. I seem to catch more fish there in day when its blowing and no boats around.

Live baits are way to go there ponned to bottom.

Sound around harries and find bait. Theres always some there . Quary rocks has good herring atm.

When i pre fished for MBC i found there, good size ones too.

Pike works really well do. I like to use it as flesh bait floated down though.

Anchoring can be problem at harries. I use reef anchor now. I lost my good mason plough anchor there.

Try anchoring right on wreck and than give rope out as tide changes.

Drifting there with live bait works too.

Keep presisting and you will crack a big red.

Always remember tide is your best friend there. Make sure you are fishing when its changing.

Goodluck mate.

Great catch!!!

we were sitting out there to sat night hoping for that jew to! managed a few squire and missed a couple big runs which was a dissapointment.

We fished over at the whiting banks and picked up some live whiting to take back there. Anchored on a good spot with heaps of live bait(herring). Got alot of pike to, but didnt use them for livies though.

What rig do you guys use at harrys for livies? we have most success with running ball sinker straight to 5/0 hook.

tried a paternoster last week there, long dropper off the 3 way swivel, with a livie. it sat untouched the whole trip there. while our running ball rigs got smashed!!!

And anyone have much success with the live herring? we use them but dont get long before they die, in the bait tank and when we send them down.

^ We were just using running ball sinker rig, never tried a paternoster there before. So for the livies just had a running ball sinker onto a swivel, then some 60lb fluro onto two 5/0 circles. Are the whiting banks just south of harries near that green beacon? Wouldn't mind having some live whiting out there as well ;) I also find that the current is fairly strong there so we fish a max of about 3 rods at a time

cheers

Yer thats the whiting banks there. Not thick with them, but enough to get enough for livies.

Whiting are great bait there live, mnanage to get alot of big snapper on them.

We dont use a swivel and have the ball sinker running straight to the hook. might try a swivel this weekend.

Current is always strong there, yer 3 rods to 4 max at a time. used a outrigger last week to spread the lines a bit.

cheers for the info
