Mono prep before spooling

G'day AFO mates!!

Just a quick question, I'm just re-spooling my spin gear and backing the braid up with mono. Does anyone reckon soaking the mono in warm water before spooling is a good idea or should i just rip open the packet and whack it on??:dry:

if im sticking backing or any line ill stick in a bucket of water - but latly ive been wind it onto an old alvey reel - set the tension and then wind onto my spin reel

i put it in water but i thought that was just to make it spin and pack tighter

You can put it on by holding a wet cloth around the line as you spool it on. This prevents heat build up and allows you to put the line on tightly.

Best way is to put spare spool on, wind on braid, tie mono onto braid, wind on mono until the spool is full.

Put good spool back on, toss spare spool on floor, wind onto reel, mono goes on first, and right amount. Should keep tension on any line winding on (mono or braid). Can wet fingers from time to tome, or lay wet cloth over line if you want it wet, but I would not be putting spare spool into water, drag might not like it.

I've always dropped fresh mono in a bucket of fairly warm water and wound it on from there - takes the memory out of the line and helps it pack in.

Another question for u guys, how do u match the mono backing with the braid u putting on?

how often do you get down to the backing?

I think boony means how u join the two together. I use a Uni-Uni

Actually, I mean how would you match the different strengths. If I have a 6lb fireline, can i just use any mono line? WAs thinking of buying the cheap jarvis walkers ones from kmart for $4

I'm inclined to go a heavier backing. When/if a fish gets you down to the backing you don't want to lose the lot :pinch:

I wants got down to the backing and just grabbed my braid and pulled in by hand. Glad i kept all my braid cos it was $60 worth on its first outing .

If you have 6lb, use some 8-10lb thin mono.

Fisher_90 - that's what I mean. It's usually a few bucks of braid to lose if you get down to the backing.:ohmy:
