Recreation review reports for Hinze Dam are now available

The Recreation Guide and Recreation Management Plan for Hinze Dam were released on the 29th of October by the Honourable Mark McArdle MP, Minister for Energy and Water Supply. As a result of the feedback we received during the review, a number of outcomes are planned for Hinze Dam, including permitting dogs on leash in designated areas, providing additional paddle craft access to the lake and improving the picnic areas by installing more tables and shelters and shade over the playground.

To view the complete list of outcomes for Hinze Dam, download your copy of the Plan from the Seqwater website.

Manchester opened to paddling and fishing

Paddling and fishing on Lake Manchester is now permitted, a direct result of the feedback we received during the recreation review.

Due to the topography and access limitations around the lake, the launch point is located over 1km from the recreation area and car park. Travel to the launch point by vehicle is not feasible and paddlers are required to transport their equipment to and from the launch point by foot, via the recreation area located off Lake Manchester Road. Paddling at Lake Manchester will be more challenging compared to other sites and will require a good level of fitness. Those looking for a fitness adventure, this may be for you!

Enjoy putting a line in? Fishing is permitted from the shoreline of the launch area and from paddle craft. Please remember that motorised watercraft and swimming are prohibited at Lake Manchester.

For further information on Lake Manchester, including a list of permitted activities, visit the Seqwater website to download your copy of the Lake Manchester Recreation Guide.

Recreation and water quality

We are the only metropolitan bulk water supplier in Australia that manages open catchments, allowing the community to enjoy our water supply lakes and catchment land for recreation activities. Our challenge is to balance community access with our essential role of ensuring a high quality water supply for the region. Download the Water Quality and Recreation Factsheet for more information.

In the interest of public health, we may need to close our lakes from time to time due to water quality including the presence of blue-green algae. For your health and safety, please observe any signage in place at the site and follow the direction of Seqwater staff. For further information please see the Seqwater blue-green algae fact sheet, or visit the Recreation and Safety Notices for a list of current closures. We will continue to perform water quality testing at these lakes, and the lakes will be re-opened when it is safe to do so.

Dyer swimming area on hold

A designated swimming area will be established at Lake Dyer, allowing visitors to escape from the summer heat. However, Lake Dyer is currently closed to all water-based recreation activities due to the presence of blue-green algae, so swimming will not be permitted until the lake has been re-opened to recreation. Off-water recreation activities are not affected by the closure and the day use area remains available for picnics and BBQs.

More improvements coming your way in 2015

As the 2014 year is drawing to a close, and Christmas is just around the corner, the Recreation Team at Seqwater are working hard to deliver on a number of outcomes at various lakes around South East Queensland. 2015 will be a big year for the delivery of recreational improvements, with a number of outcomes on track for implementation in early 2015.

Meebun Trailhead upgrade at Lake Wyaralong including a new car park and toilets. This will provide

additional car parking and access closer to the start of the trail network.

Approximately 10km of multi-use trails on the western side of Lake Samsonvale. The trails are due to be opened in early 2015 and will be available to walkers, trail runners, horse riders and mountain bikers.

Lake Clarendon will see a paddle craft launch point and a bird watching trail established. Fishing will be permitted once the paddle craft launch point is completed.

Designated ‘stop off points’ will be established around Lake Wivenhoe, allowing boaties and paddlers to access land around the lake for rest breaks.

Make sure you stay up to date with improvements at your lakes by visiting the Seqwater website or connecting with us via Facebook.

Please respect our neighbours

Much of the land around our lakes is private property. If a Seqwater sign is not displayed, that means that the area is not a designated recreation area and you must not enter. Please do not launch, retrieve or beach on land around our lakes, other than at signed designated recreation areas. Don’t forget to visit the Seqwater website to see which recreation activities are permitted at each of our lakes.

Play it safe

More than 2.6 million people visit our recreation areas each year. While our rangers regularly patrol our recreation sites, they can't be everywhere to help you. Find out how you can play it safe at our dams, lakes and parks this summer.

That's a shame, guess the prfma are stretched as it is, would hurt to get afew more younger people in to re energise the group and push for a lil more funding and take on these projects, look at ewen maddock how far it's come in short space of time! I was one of the original group that got together at braceys house along with Andrew to get it going all from a post on sweetwater. They ran an excellent comp on the weekend il be there next year hopefully.

Problem is there are only so many hours you can put in to a day, I believe PRFMA is pushed for member participation at the moment, like many groups, so I dont think they could not really take on more even if SEQ water had put their hand in their pocket and funded the initial stocking.. It would not be right for the PRFMA to use funds raised to stock lake samsonvale through the boating scheme to seed another lake, people dont mind paying for a permit that funds their fishing, but I reckon that would change quickly if the funds were going some where else. PRFMA made the right decision in my opinion.

When there was government funding for stocking I was in 6 stocking groups, active in 5 of them. Now those not lucky enough to be part of the SIP have to undertake so much fundraising, (fingerlings are not cheap, particularity since Bill passed away) I only have the time to participate in one stocking group. Even then the number of fingerlings going in is very small compared to previous years..
