queensland 06-11-15 Hays Inlet / Pine River report

A friend and I fished the flats on the run in tide targeting whiting on surface lures. I was using a bassday sugapen 70mm lure, Nordic Stage Areal 6'6 'jaeger', 1000 size reel and 8lb braid and leader and my friend was using a similar setup.

Expecting to catch a heap of whiting, I was pleasantly surprised when a school of giant herring turned up. 

They are awesome fun on light gear and my reel was screaming on some runs.

All fish were caught off the surface, followed by a spectacular aerobatic fight. We even had a sea eagle lurking around trying to take the fish as they came to the surface during the struggle.
 
In total we landed 8 fish in about 30 minutes, not to mention multiple hookups and 3 lost lures. 

I also managed to land a few whiting in the end.

That is a great session. Awesome to see that they were around in numbers! I've caught one in the pine myself, not quite as big but really fun to catch. Would have been lots of fun at that size.

They look like they are built for speed. Wouldn't have taken for a surface feeding fish for some reason.
