Christmas Eve report

I headed out  yesterday with Luke and James with the intention of catching some mackerel before sunset.  We hit a couple of the Beacons a few hours before dark and there were plenty of mackerel around. We had a good time hooking and losing 6 fish and losing another five that liked the slugs. Boated 2 nice school mac's at 80cm each and a small one we let go.

We had some dinner and played UNO for a while before bunkering down for the night.

After a restless sleep and getting some light rain through the night I got up at 4:30am and headed towards the cape with the kids stil in their swags.

Ran over some bait and threw out a bibbed lure to see what was around and had a hit but no hook up. While still making my way to Cape Moreton I saw a small free swimming Marlin. Woke the boys up to have a look and threw a soft plastic in front of it but it showed no interest.

We set a lure spread and headed off in search of Dolphin Fish. While the wind was down we headed wide to the 100m line.

No hits at all but a few heavy showers. I saw some bait appear on the sounder and slowed down. Then the big fish appeared.

I put the boat into neutral and free spooled the shot gun 6" soft plastic lure while I pulled the other rods in. By the time I did this the 1oz jig head had made its way down towards the fish. The sounder showed them as high as 35m from the surface. Picking up the rod I was a bit excited. A couple of twitches to get their attention before a high speed retrieve on the new Stradic FK I bought myself for Chrissy.  10 meters up the lure is crunched by a good fish. Giving the drag a good workout as it headed for the bottom. Such a smooth drag with carbon washers as standard on the new Stradics. After about 5-10 minutes arms aching we looked over the edge in anticipation to see what is was.

A beautiful yellow tail was a give away. A PB King fish of over 10kg and 1.1 meter long. What a start, but unfortunately the wind kicked in and the sea turned to crap instantly. It was too dangerous for the kids to fight a fish in these conditions so pulled the pin and ran home.

Unfortunately I had not replaced the SD card in the good camera from last trip so only got an ordinary photo when we got home.

A trip to remember for us.image.thumb.jpeg.4b9278c0c6462d104b85f1aimage.thumb.jpeg.d8ad36795401251e4e32df2

Have a safe break everyone.
