Fishing tips around Pt Douglas

Hi guys, just after some tips for fishing around Pt Douglas this April.

I'll definitely be heading down the Dickson inlet and trolling for some Barra using an 8-10kg rod and some lures but I was recently given a Phlueger 2-4kg spin combo. I've heard these are quite a good 4 piece as far as travel rods go and the reel seems to be quite good quality.

I'm after some ideas to use my lighter gear as I've mainly targeted Barra in the past. Looking for any suggestions, locations, species, rigs and baits. As I've mentioned I'll be around the Dickson inlet, Pt Douglas Marina, 4 Mile Beach and willing to travel if need be.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm from Cairns and never fished around port, so cant give any specific spots there. In April for your lighter outfit, get a castnet and if you get live prawns you are garunteed good fish eg: fingermark and grunter. Or if you find a yabby bank, pump yabbies' and fish off the beach early morning and dusk for blue and king salmon, jewies and grunter. Note there are plagues of whiting on those beaches so if they are not your thing and you get sick of them chewing up your yabbies, use them as livebait off the beach for king salmon and barra; you'll have to put up with a lot of sharks before you get a good fish though.

If its calm in April when you are there, the doggy mackerel will come in close to the beach, very especially early morning on a high tide- throw high speed metal or live whiting under a float at them.

At that time of year there should be the start of the 'winter' fish feeding on bait under lights at night. Find lights on the water and fish small plastics dead sticked on the surface for GT's, hairtail, and what is locally called 'mad fish' (they are some type of scad around 40cm that look like a little tuna). Also always tarpon around. There should be small barra in the 60's under the lights too, if its a calm warm night; use prawn artificials like gulp shrimps; cast into shadows then slow roll them just under the surface into the light.

Hope that helps
