Fish Identification

What fish is this?

caught in the Gold Coast Broadwater 24 April 2017. Doesn't look like anything fancy, yet I can't find it on any fish chart, website or book. 

It jumped on while fishing for garfish using fish guts for bait. 

Its doing my head in to know what it is.

A herring. Pretty common castnet catch and a decent baitfish.

I assume that given it is not listed on the government website for catch limits (as far as I can see) there are no limits to size or numbers?

I don't think so being considered a bait fish,  I cannot see a listing either.

Interesting how you caught it but then again they are often caught on bait jigs so why not!

I think non regulated fish which these herring are part of, have a bag limit of 20.

Bag limit of 20 !!, that could be a problem if you're using a castnet.

Not hard to get 50 or more if toy happen to drop right on top of a school.

No size or bag limit on herring. Great live bait for estuary species
