When you first pull it up you can just see the orange deep down in its throat and by the time you remove the hook its all up. I sent it down on a dropper but do  not know if it will survive,

Well done. Better than not.

Do you know what the survival rate is for deep water bass?

I sent an email to Dave Roberts whois the fish scientist for SEQ water here is part of his response.

Ray,

Barotrauma can happen at surprisingly shallow depths, we just don’t notice it until their stomach pops out from the deeper caught fish.

Attached is some work on Australian bass and other stocked fish that shows venting with a needle can increase mortality. So too can prolonged handling, but we know that already. Bombing them back down on a weighted line does help if the fish can’t swim back down by themselves, otherwise if the fish is strong enough to swim down on its own, then that seems to be fine for bass. The problem with venting with a needle is it can easy to puncture vital organs and lead to later death and the needle can be dirty and introduce disease and infection.

Cheers

Ray
