Jumped Ship At 1770 To Catch Reds

The plan to head to 1770 over the weekend was hatched quickly as the perfect weather prediction firmed up mid week so I organised my boat with my son Brock to skipper and crewed by my mate Nathan as well as Julian and me in his boat. We left Friday arvo and shot up the highway getting in to 1770 late that night to grab some sleep before heading out on 1st light to the reef, the weather was mint and after a good run out we were fishing by 0830 Saturday morning.

It was tuff fishing for our boat but we could see the young fellas in my boat landing some cracking fish close by in my boat. Nathan got many PBs with coral trout being upgraded each time they pulled another 1 in I think Nathan will be going back with us next chance he gets, it was his Shads plastics doing the damage I think he mainly used the tuff prawn on the trout.

Both boats did get red throat emperor, tuskies, hussar, cod and spangeled emperor to fill the box, after the days fishing we anchored up behind the reef for the night and rafted up 3 boats as 1 of Julians mates was up there with us from Maryborough in his bar crusher it was a top night having a few cold ones and telling fishing stories. The Sunday morning we woke early with the plan to hit a Red spot at 1st light the weather was just getting better it was glassed out but this was not the only icing to the cake as we heard the young crew next to us had dropped a good red 1st up so we set about finding another 1.

I put on a big tapered strip of mullet with a whole squid pinned next to it on a  ganged set of 8/0 true turn hooks I had my new shimano combo rod reel I wanted to blood in and it soon felt the tug of a big fish the shimano tcurve bent over when I put the talica 12 in to gear, this fish had all the traits of a big Red thumping away not budging from the bottom. I was using 40lb exact depth braid with 60lb leader and hoping it all stood up to this test the boys looked on from my boat just 10m away and this fish actually turned our boat and started pulling it backwards I would not have believed it if I didn't see it myself. Julian hooked up to and we had a double hook up of reds but the lines were crossed and my heart again skipped a beat we sorted who was under who and could get into the fight again it was 1 of those moments when you know you have won a battle but not the war.

After what seemed an erternity I started to inch it away from the bottom and soon inches became feet you still have horrible thoughts of some thing happening on the way up like the ever present sharks in these tropical waters but soon we saw colour and I let out a cry of Red. I slipped the net under a stonker of a Red Emperor and placed on the deck it was impressive to see they just are so broad across the head at this size at 85cm and around 12kg.

Julian boated his Red as well a respectable fish 0f 60cm and around 6kg after dealing with the fish we started another drift to see if there was more reds there photos could wait. We tried every trick but could not raise another fish from here so we called it and moved south to another spot and the young fellas again were nailing big trout it was a case of us boating Reds and the boys boating good trout we weren't sharing.

The morning finished for us around 10am and the run home could get us back in around lunch time at the ramp it was another perfect trip back and the highway was good to can't wait for another chance to experience this place it will be not forgotten in a hurry.

Both fish on the truth mat

just curious, how much deep did you find this fish, by deep i mean length from the shore

Roughly 90kms from 1770 bar. This trip we did 246kms which is only short for me and Tugger. My boat used 155ltrs.

Nah, I don't get jealous over fish Robbie, lol

I am just glad the boys got a red each, they sure put the effort in this trip considering the trip was only a short one this time.

You sure take a lure like a fish mate! 🙂

I bet you're itching to get back on the water hope the weather is kind for you but I will keep you in mind if we are organising another weekend with a good weather window.

That’s an understatement. I would happy with a fish like Julian’s let alone your horse.

Pray for weather like you had.

Love the 1770 trips and great to hear you guys did well.

Praying to the weather gods that our window works out and also fill  two eskys with a decidedly red tinge to them both.

Just remember Luke those eskies fill much quicker with whole fish. 😂😀
