Saturday Morning 4 August Northern Moreton Bay Fishing Report

Morning all,

Just a quick report as I am about to head right again now.

Plan was to take the new boat out past Cape Moreton (first time for me), but had to abort. Chop was fine although bit more than expected. That wasn't the issue.

No matter what I did I just couldn't get the boat from porposing the while time. Played with the trim, speed moved some stuff around and still no joy whatsoever.

So headed to Curtain for the first time. Plenty of boats already on the anchor so did a couple of drifts to get the feel then anchored up over a wreck and landed some monster bat fish (think that's what they are see picture.)

Couldn't get anything else so pulled the pin and decided to see if I might get lucky with the Kings at Tanga's. Let's just say that there was a s@#$%load of undersize pinkies everywhere ... but I hooked up to a King 🙂 ...

Slight problem though...

It had snaffled the pinky on the live bait rig 🤪🤣 ... tried to play it (as I was laughing my arse off)... 30 seconds of later Mr King said f@#k this and snap. Still fun though.

Boat already on the mark already laughed as well...he had been busted off 3 times already. I couldn't get another hit but saw one of the other guys hookup only to be busted off.

Pulled stumps and headed back to Scarborough in a bouncy bloody boat ... not matter what I did. Arse is just too heavy ...

Will see how she goes this morning with just me in it. Going to take some bricks with me to see if I can balance the front out, otherwise kinda not sure what to do next...

1. Take it back and see what the dealer can do

2. Hyrdrofoil?

3. Tabs? IMG_1744.thumb.jpg.98a20cf34cdac76afc65961ebb7fc398.jpg

@demarc how did you go mate ?

hope you do better today those kingies can be fun at times and a pain too, seems you have a bit of weight down the back of the boat if its doing that wheres the fuel tank in the floor?,might need a few baggs of cement up the front to keep it down

Thanks mate...that's what I was thinking 🙂 although seems a bit strange given the boat was owned by the one owner since 2008...

Hey Poddy. Saw it blowing 15 - 20 at the cape so went for a drive to Kingscliff instead.

The porposing is definately a trim issue. However tabs and foils will only hide the real issue. Take your boat out again with a mate. Find a nice stretch of water, mile long. Get to WOT, trim her right out till it cavitates thentrim back in 1 or 2 pushes. While you're driving, get your mate to go to the stern and snap some happy pics of your skeg in the water. If you can not see the anti cav plate, your motor is too deep and needs to come up.

I also have a spare SE sport 300 foil you can have if you want.

Thanks mate will take the advice this week if I can get out during the day 🙂 bloody hell it looks awesome today!

Boat went much better yesterday ... still got some issues but better than Saturday. Couldn't get a snap of the back but have a feeling it needs to go up to the top hole...it's the second from the top already. Couldn't go lower, if I do a dead stop the wash almost covers the top....

I went flat stick off Scarborough (beware the VMR boat ramp is down to single lane at the moment) and she absolutely ate going into a following sea...scared the **** out of me at 42mph but sat right on top...but going into the chop was tough trying to figure the trim...ended up with her trimmed in a fair bit at causing at 25 / 30mph...still got some bouncing but seemed the sweet spot.

@demarc might hit you up mate

Don't discount the type of prop you are running as well. some are more suited to lifting the bow (not what you want) and some for lifting the stern.

My boat is like yours, have to trim right in to stop it jumping. Now have two deep cycles up front and a new prop to see if that makes any difference

Nice one mate. Sorry the boat is bouncing around. Nice to see bat fish in the bay. I have not seen them this far south before. Most people hate them and say they eat bad and throw them back. I have eaten them.

I hope you sort out the boat soon and its great you are getting out so much.

Yeah prop choice is a big one ... but didn't want to do that one yet.

Being recommended http://www.permatrim.com.au/Outboards.htm at the moment ... small cost to see if it works.

Still like adding some cement up front as well...although might try 2 x jerry cans with water...that way I can empty them as I go and see if it helps...besides if I get lost carrying extra water could be a double bonus 🙂

It's all good! The bounce I reckon is something I just need to tweak and it feels like the fundamentals are right just tweaking 🙂

Bat fish edible eh? Was a couple of kg's worth of fillets there ... what kind of fish is it similar too? And when you say eaten them ... was it something you would do again?

Yes I would eat them again. It was a long time ago on a trip off Marble Island. I remember everyone saying not to eat them as taste is not ideal. we had a pretty quiet trip so I took one and it was nice beer battered. Perhaps not as good as emperor but sill ok.

How well is AFO going when you've got these legends offering to lend/give motor parts to a complete stranger!!  Kudos to you Brad and Julian!!
