How To Deter Possums From Garden

Hi, I've recently planted a lemon and lime tree but have found that possums have eaten the leaves and branches of them quite a bit. What are suggestions to deter them? what has worked and not worked?

Very strong chilli powder spray.

I make my own , big heap of chilli's blended in chopper, boil for

1/2 hour  with water, about 2 litre's. cool, put

in spray bottle and spray trees.

Stand up wind or you'll know what sore eyes are..

Keeps grubs off garden too.

thanks. although I've read that possums eat chillis so was wondering if people had success with that

daughter in esk has 15 mangoes in a line and uses a couple of transistor radios

Are you sure it's possums?

My Mayer Lemon tree gets hit by the swamp wallabies unless I enclose it with a mesh fence.

They then have a go at the Tahitian Lime but it's a much bigger tree.

yep have seen the possums on the fence, although I haven't actually seen them eating it. Don't get wallabies where I am.

Only other animal I get is cane toads

How big are your trees?  I have a plastic skirt around my paperbark  which stops them climbing

Too true @benno573. I used to have a dog and could grow veggies, herbs and flowers in the garden with no problem.  Heaps of bowen mangoes to share with bats, possums and neighbours.  Lost our mutt a few years ago. Now the possums eat the new shoots on the mango trees before they can even flower and I have to build plant prisons to grow anything or I lose it to possums and scrub turkeys. Drives me crazy. Looking at a bed full of annuals just isn’t the same when it looks like this:

Gee mate that is crook. We have lots of possums here and they have never touched the citrus. There are lots of caterpillars here that give them some curry though.

I hit them with some chilli spray the other night and so far so good. its been 3 nights and no more damage...
