Have fished Narrabeen Lagoon a few times during our last few Australian trips.  It really is a lovely place  and great to take the grandsons to.  They have caught bream, whiting and puffers, even the wife caught some.  Was wondering if lures are worth a go and if so what type ?

We fly out 06 Feb for 3 months and will be staying at our daughters at Warriewood.   Any of you fishos live around there and fancy showing a wrinkly auld pommie barsteward the ropes feel free 😀😁

Have caught fish by the caravan park and just upstream of Pelican Bridge.

Will add a few images from  trips we had there 😀

hey mate,

looks like a lot of good family memories there.

I haven't fished that area specifically so the advice on lures i give is more general in nature but should apply to the majority of estuary systems along the east coast.

first thing is that you will have much greater success with all forms of fishing when the water is quiet.  early morning or last light are definitely peak bite times, generally co-incides with when everyone else is in bed or at home as well.  fish as light as possible, use long casts to try and avoid spooking fish.  your target species are likely going to be flathead, bream, tailor and trevally.  soft plastics are generally cheaper but do require a bit more skill to get them to work properly.  With hard bodies you certainly get what you pay for to a certain extent but there are definitely some very effective more budget lures around.  Atomic and RMG are two reasonable brands to look at and generally reasonably good value.  50-70mm size lures that dive to 4-8ft would be a good general place to start.

if i was fishing there with lures, i would grab some zman 3.5" minnow-z (paddle tail) soft plastics and match them up with a 1/6oz or 1/4oz jighead.  Colour wise I find natural colours certainly work best in clear water, opening night is a personal favourite.  Also worth grabbing some z-man streakz (curl tail) plastics, z-man 2" jiggling grubs or squidgie 100mm wrigglers in bloodworm colour.  hop any of these along drop offs or around structure and something is bound to come knocking.

That being said, if you just want to catch fish, I would stick with what you have been doing in the past.  also much easier for the young-ins to get involved with bait.  Please also make sure you check the rules and regs around legal sizes and licencing requirements before wetting a line - https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational

Good luck, enjoy your time here.

Many thanks for that comprehensive  reply Benno, its much appreciated mate.  Will be taking all of your ideas on board 🙂

As soon as we arrive will be applying for a yearly fishing licence for the wife and I,think they were 30$ last trip. Under 18s do not need a licence under NSW regulations.

Looking forward to fishing with the grandsons again 🙂

Watch out for my fishing reports on here Benno.
