\"Sunken net had lethal potential

News release | 20 November, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to a public-spirited caller to the 24-hour Fishwatch Hotline, an unmarked sunken net that totally blocked off a tidal anabranch of Coorooman Creek has been removed.

Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries' Queensland Boating and Fishing Patrol field officer Amanda Bunn said the Yeppoon-based patrol officers were alerted on Monday (November 19) and located the 10 metre long set net, which was effectively blocking off the creek.

Ms Bunn, who was assisted by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service officer Mal Mann, said the 115mm mesh net tied off on mangroves either side of the creek was weighted down with chain and scrap metal to ensure it was out of sight below the surface.

\"There was nobody in attendance when we seized this illegal net, which had the potential kill a significant number of fish,\" Ms Bunn said.

\"The recently set net was probably targeting barramundi during the current November 1 to February 1 closed season, so it was fortunate that it held no fish when located.\"

The maximum penalty for illegally setting a net is $22,500.

Ms Bunn said that the Patrol welcomed assistance from the public to report suspected illegal fishing activities on the 24-hour Fishwatch Hotline on 1800 017 116\"

My mate lost his outboard off his tinnie out in Moreton Bay earlier this year to a discarded trawler net.He was chasing a school of tuna when the boat suddenly got sucked backed under and the transome starting going under before sling shotting him back up into the air when he looked back there where 2 gouge marks running up the inside of the transome and no outboard, he was left floating around out on the bay past Mud Island no phone coverage standing up on the esky waving his V sheet he got the attention of another boat who towed him back into the Port of brisbane ramp. Insurance copmany coughed up, lucky it wasn't bolted on otherwise the whole rig would be sitting on the bottom.

Heath.
