queensland Lake Macdonald Bass Fishing

Headed out to Lake Macdonald on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday morning. Perfect weather. I'm pretty new to bass fishing but set up the gopro and put together a short video of some of the fish I caught.

Pretty pleased to catch a few that day although none of them were huge.

Thanks. Its a bit of a learning curve with the bass. Going to make sure I get a few more sessions in over winter.

Just started using it recently. Great dam like you say.  Looks like it'll be shut for a couple of years from the start of 2020 for some work.

Hope they don't end up losing all the fish.

Fantastic video mate well done. 

Some great bass. 

I have not fished that one. Bucket list I suppose... it is a pretty big list.

Thanks mate. Its near Noosa on the Sunshine Coast. Best get in this year before the dam gets drained.

Oh wow so they have to drain it to fix it! What water way does it go into?

Empties into Six Mile Creek and connects to the Mary River  just south of Gympie.

The intention is to rebuild the wall making the spillway wider. No plans to increase the height.

The plan includes using the  rubble from the current wall to create structures/habitats in the main basin.

Nice. Do you know if they are including fish ladders?

Great link thanks Luc. They had this in it... right down the bottom haha. Not a fish barrier... until they get the bill to fish passageway... then it might change.

Will the upgrade allow fish passage downstream?

Yes. We are looking at spillway design options to allow fish to travel downstream safely. A fish biologist has been engaged to assess the classes and sizes of fish species found upstream and provide advice for the spillway design. In addition, the project is subject to approval from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the downstream passage will be subject to assessment.

Oh I just read it properly... "travel downstream" is not upstream...

But they do say this... so a definite maybe...

The project is subject to approval from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF).  The dam is a barrier to upstream fish passage and part of this approval includes improving the ability for fish to move through the waterway. In consultation with DAF, we are investigating both on site and off site fishway options to address the impacts of the existing dam barrier on local waterways. The location of the fishway passage option will be identified in the Impact Assessment Report.
