Hi guys,

 

I am a complete starter in fishing. I live in Brisbane so mostly freshwater and some saltwater landside options are available like Redcliffe, Shorncliffe and other piers land fishing. I am just figuring out what to start from in terms of gears. Budgetwise do you think I should go and by some second-hand fishing sets and combos or just by some basic staff?

Is there any universal bait which can be used in many locations like this - Zman Grubz Soft Plastic Lure 2.5in? Or I should go for live bait like shrimps or calamari?

The main question - what I should start with to go into fishing? What would you say about this fishing sets?

Hi Andy,

There is no real one answer as to where to go and what to use. You could go to heaps of places and try heaps of things and get very frustrated, snap your rod and end up taking up knitting!

The easiest way to catch something is using bait like worms, prawns or a fillet bait (mullet is cheap and very effective). Fish simple rigs, smaller hooks and get some confidence in what you do. Even going to the Brissie river and catching the humble catfish will get a bend in your rod, albeit not a (good) feed on the plate.

 

once you have some confidence, you will start to experiment with different rigs, baits, locations and even move up to lures and those sort of things, some of it will work, some of it you might look back on and go “what the eff was I thinking there”. It’s like most things in life - As you do it more, you’ll get better and more comfortable with what you are doing.

 

as far as places to start, any of the beaches along the redcliffe area can hold fish, look for variations in the beach like gutters etc, try and fish when everyone else isn’t there - nights, early mornings, week days etc. you can also find heaps of spots along the Brisbane river, out near shorncliffe, the pine river and up around Bribie. Also plenty of spots on the sunny or Gold Coast if you are able to travel.

i personally don’t measure the success of a trip by the number or size of the fish I catch. For me it is a relaxation, chance to unwind and a way to spend a bit of time shooting the ship with some mates.

Hi Andy, that Sienna combo would be a good outfit to start off with. You can easily bait fish with it and then toss out some lures if the mood strikes you. Just remember to keep it oiled up.

And yes those Zman grubs are a very versatile lure. Go for a natural colour as this time of year the water is clear. 

Just remember if you are going to toss lures around you have to use the right line and learn how to tie leader knots etc. 

Don't be afraid to ask questions as there are a lot of people here happy to help out.

Nice one mate. The advice above is great. 

I would only add 2 things.

You will need to be prepared to be persistent. It can be tricky to catch fish and it takes time to work out best methods. Even the pro's sometimes come home with nothing. Pick a nice spot, chuck out some bait and have a go. 

The other thing is fish are regulated by size and bag limits. I use an app My Fishing Mate. It has all the info to identify your catch and how big it has to be to keep it for dinner. 

Oh and make sure you show us some photos of your catches.

Hi Drop Bear. That app you mentioned, My Fishing Mate, sounds interesting but when I searched the App Store for it, it was nowhere to be found. Perhaps because I am using an Apple product?
