we headed out to make the most of the great weather on Saturday and Sunday. On saturday our plan was to fish the high tide for an hour or so then head over to towra to see if there were any crabs about. Unfortunately there were no crabs but the kings were out to play only taking live squid. Ended the day with 1 hookup and one bust off catching 1 fat king at 78cm.

Sunday was pretty much the same, except we wanted to solely target kings for the high tide. We had difficulties catching the live squid only managing two, and we had 1 hookup and 1 bust off again!! We left with another kingfish this time going 77cm but much much fatter!

 

My father has been waking me up early taking me fishing since i can remember!! We eventually got a boat nothing big or special just a 4.5m tinny and all of a sudden i was the one waking up him up early.

We have been boat fishing now for about 7-8yrs always going after the bread and butter species catching a nice feed of flathead, squid and crabs was our go to. We occasionally went for kings here and there and unfortunately my dad could never catch one it was always me hooking up and landing the fish!!

That all changed not long ago when my father caught his first king it was a 1m+ monster but it was a decent size and definitely one to proud of. Later that day back at home my dad said it was the best fish he has ever caught

Great job on your first report, it was very entertaining to read. I will watch the video now, awesome job on the kingies too. They are one that is on my bucket list.

Nice video mate - popular spot by the looks of it!!  Well done on the two kingies - what depth and what size gear out of interest (ie. line breaking strain)?

Yes, the fight is great. I don't think they go anywhere as hard as kingies but they have quite a few speedy runs (from the ones I've caught). It's a matter of how heavy your tackle is though, I've caught one on thirty pound and it had 2-3 runs from memory (very good ones) and one on 12 pounds and it also fought very good - just some more runs.

Hey hamish what time of year do you go for threadys? Ive always wanted to try get one. I just know nothing about them.

I am by all means no expert on them, I've only caught a couple. From what I've heard, threadfin aren't seasonal. The main factors are live baiting (they will take dead baits though), full moons and tides. I have caught them on the run out tide, and while it has not influenced me that much full moons are when you want to aim your session at.

You mean like tonights super moon?......guess id better take a big rig to colmslie with me and my cast net. Cheers for the info

Yeah its one of the more busy spots in the Bay unfortuantely. The first day i was running 45lb line with 50lb leader, My dad was running 80lb with 100lb on the first day and on the second day i went upto to 55lb with an 80lb leader. The depth was 12-18metres i dont actually remember  but it wasnt too deep or too shallow, there is like a hard kelpy reefy bottom there (that doesnt show up on the sounder) We have lost two anchors there
