Advice For Freshwater

Recommended Posts

I’m going on a holiday in a few weeks to Dubbo and some of the surrounding areas and need advice on fish species  and how to catch them and general fishing advice for freshwater fishing . I will be fishing mostly around Macquarie river and possibly a dam or 2 all land based . My experience with Fishing is almost 2 year’s I can catch bream and flathead on soft plastics relatively easily And sometimes I catch some other fish like tailor and small snapper as by catch and I have little experience with hardbodie lures but some .I’ve caught a few of tailor and flathead with them. I also have some experience with bait fishing using bread nippers and corn and dough . For fish like bream and whiting. And I have very good/decent gear rods reels line and tackle are perfect for a variety of light fishing so for gear I’m all set . Took a long time to save up for .I just need some advice for freshwater fishing cause I’m clueless when it comes to freshwater 😂

I'd use the 14lb as a minimum as you will be fishing tough structure with fallen trees in the water etc providing the snags they call home.

Yeah, that sounds good ellicat. I'd imagine the mighty Murray Cod may fight a bit like the Estuary Cod, as in the fact it will brick you in the snags if you aren't ready for it.

Breaming with bro, it's certainly something you'll want to consider when fishing in snaggy waters for any type of fish... Heavier line may not get as many bites (I think having a natural presentation will help with a heavier leader), but you will hopefully land whatever you hook! 🙂

Yea ok I’m bringing all my gear regardless anyway . Cause that’s not my only stop . I’m was thinking to target fish like trout Redfin yellowbelly and carp but you guys really seem to be into the Murray cod

Sounds like bliss! You're going to have an awesome trip[ regardless of what you catch I think.

I have heard carp go very hard on light gear - some good fun while cleaning our waterways 🙂

I have only eaten trout once as well, it tastes great - a lot like Aussie Salmon....

Here is a link on Dubbo fishing as well -

Hi Breaming with bro, you're more likely to catch redfin or the odd Yellowbelly than to snag a Murray cod on your first go.

I mainly catch redfin down in Canberra and most of your bream lures will work on them. I've had the best success with a 2' pre-made swim shad in rainbow trout colour. It's only a cheapie Jarvis Walker lure from kmart, but has accounted for most of my catches. It also accounted for the one solid yellow I've caught.

I mostly use my 2-4kg graphite rod with a 2000 reel loaded with 8lb mainline and 10lb fluro leader. I've yet to even get a hit from something big enough to bust me off, but then again I'mbank fishing dams and haven't ventured out into the rivers.

Murray cod specialists generally use massive swimbait rods with 20lb mainline and up to 60lb leader as the murray cod can hit the metre plus mark.

Hope you get onto some though, they're on my list of fish to try and catch.

Like Dinodadog said, a 1/2oz spinner bait will work for the yellas and might get the cod interested. You can get the odd redfin on them too as they're not fussy when they're biting.
