queensland Snapper Closure Qld 15 July To 15 August

I know it has been mentioned many times in posts on this forum but I thought it might be worthwhile to make a separate topic letting everyone know that we have now entered the one month closure for snapper and pearl perch in Qld. A mate who is not on this or other fishing forums called me yesterday to see when we were going snapper hunting and that made me realise that it would be easy to miss these changes. Let’s hope it has the desired effect long term.  Here is further info.

Thanks for the reminder, Old Scaley.

I 100% support the close season. I think on more fishes breeding season there should be close seasons. It's more sustainable that way.

Yep, good initiative Steve. I'd be interested to know/find out if Fisheries have put signs up at boat ramps - can someone confirm when they are next launching? I can't get out this weekend but hopefully next weekend.

Didnt see any signs today at clontarf. No fisheries , no water police. Beautiful arvo tho... 

Did myself a favour and went looking for new spots in the bay to fish for something other than snapper. 

Found some great looking ground out south of the 4 beacons that looks promising.

Yes, that is ellicat. 

It would be one of the only ways to get awareness out who aren't on social media and may not know about the closure.

While it would be disappointing to not be able to target them (if you were unaware and came to the ramp ready for snaps) it' better than breaking the law..

Yeah south of Tangalooma @Drop Bear

Beacons are E2, E3,E4 & E5 some very worthy looking ledges ESE of that area.. looks like a top spot for cod ,tuskfish ans grass sweetlip. Hopefully I can fish it this week and it not hold snapper.

It's their peak breeding period so will at least give them a chance for that. Don't wanna end up like SA.

There painted on the sides of the channel markers themselves. 

Or get yourself the Boating HD navionics app. You'll find them on that very easily.

Yep, it's a three year ban I believe. I've heard about it on the news. 

You'd have to think there'd be a some people taking them still, either unknowingly (I doubt it) or illegally... And I have heard that since snapper suffer from barotrauma they don't release as well. I do support the close season though, it is important to  let our fish re populate!

Im just hoping I dont hook a snapper and it be a PB fish.... a PB in closed season would break my heart.

Record the PB, take a pic & you’ll always know you caught it. 
doesn’t have to be in the esky to be a PB

No true mate,but id rather not be catching snapper at all during closed season @Towknee,

Alot of my fish are released to fight another day so that doesn't bother me.

Great to hear. I misinterpreted your message. 
I’m all for sustainable fishing. We caught a legal snapper in the passage last weekend and let it go. 
I’ve got two young boys & I hope they can catch good fish when they grow up.

Just FYI we are making a lot of shellfish (oyster) reefs in Moreton Bay so that the fishing will be better for our next generation. 

Every hectare of reef that we restore "produces" 2.5 ton of harvestable fish every year forever. Every adult oyster filters 180 ltrs of water every day. All the algae sediment and micro plastics etc are filtered out and stored on the sea floor. They are pretty awesome.

Not sure if that was directed at me or cobia but if me always hunt the tuskies In The day. They do some random thing at night where they hole up and some how impede the entry with some slime thing, so I’ve read any ways

I was just wondering about fishing for bay brutes generally.

Ill fish it quite a few ways @ellicat

Ill do run in and run out tide based around sunset, from there ill look at fishing it  slack water/tide change in the day time

May take me a few trips and weeks to get something but it looks good as I marked plenty of fish on the sounder

Like @jon says... Big black spot tuskies often coat them selves in slime and jamb them selvestight into cover at night making targeting them quite hard in the dark

Hopefully I can position the boat at anchor in the right spot and get what ever lives there to take a bait a fair bit away from the ledge as i think hooking a tuskie in close to it only means one thing and that's bust offs. I think the 80lb gear will make an appearence for this spot,

What type of moreton bay brutes are u interested in chasing @ellicat

Snapper,tuna,cobia,tuskfish,Golden trevally,cod, quite a few XOS species frequent Moreton Bay at certain times of the year... let me know i might be able to pm u some sneaky tips

Snapper (after 15/8) and tuskies probably top the list at the moment, @Cobiaaddict.

Not after any big secrets, just trying to figure the timing side of things more than anything.

In Fiji and Tonga (and I'm sure plenty of other places) locals target Parrots and Tuskies at night. They use powerful torches and snorkel with very dodgy hand spears made from a piece of reo bar and a bit of car tube. 

They spear them in the nooks and crannies in their mucus bags and have to quickly get them into a makeshift boat, made from half a plastic 44 gallon drum that they tow around with them, before the sharks get the fish.  

The markets at Latoka were full of mostly small parrots that had been speared this way. 

The best thing at the markets were the bugs. They are so underrated over there and super duper cheap and so delicious.
