queensland Crabbing Tips

Hi all,

Just wondering if you can catch mud crabs off headlands? I have a spot off a Cairns' headland and would like to crab it. I am not too sure if the bottom is muddy or not but there is a lot of rocks and areas for the crabs to hide in. Will there be mud crabs there?

Yes, I believe crabs will hide in the muddy, rocky areas. I have seen people just find them walking along a headland in a barra fishing show (episode of iFish). He literally picked it up, right from his feet! 

Fresh bait will get the best result, like most things. Remember to tell us how you go!

Quite possibly you would catch Mud crabs @Jaz44,

I found mud crabbing in open water very hard in SE QLD,  Always catch Carpet Sharks and small fish rather than crabs,

Give it a go I reckon,

I haven’t been able to fish my spot yet due to the crazy winds we have had for the past few months. I have been stuck estuary fishing. The few times the weekend looked good, I had other commitments.

Aren't there plenty of crabs in the estuaries?

Yeah. Trinity Inlet is packed with them. My spot is on the headlands so I have to wait for a good opportunity. I have't tried crabbing in the estuaries (landbased that is). Where I fish, there is minimal structure so I always wrote crabs off.

Mate they pretty much go anywhere. I have caught them on sandy flats with no structure around. If you can drag a pot along I would chuck it in. 

I got a nice buck today. It only had one good claw and one small one but is nice and rusty. Not huge but measures. yay.
