Black Fly Larvae

A friend has a Black Fly Larvae factory.

They make huge volumes of them and grind them up for stock feed - mostly For chickens.

He has asked me to see if I think they can value add and sell them for bait.

Mealworms vs Black Soldier Fly Larva

They are live but black in colour, don't smell and are clean and not bad for you. They assure me that they can be eaten by people.

Has anyone tried these?

I think they would be great for species like Bream, Bass, Silver Perch, Whiting, Mullet and any other smaller species.

My current plan revolves around them being cheap. I am hoping to get a stack and use them as burly and stick a few on a #2 circle hook under a float and see what turns up.

What do you reckon?

If you could buy about a litre of them for about $10 would you have a crack?

Hey Drop Bear

I'd sure be willing to give them a go. I reckon they'd be nuts for tilapia.

Maybe mullet may become a target-able species on the line for me if I start using these...

Like Old Scaley said above though, it depends on where I can pick them up.

Cheers Hamish

I am hoping to find out more and pick some up next week.

Hopefully I can drop some to anyone who wants to give them a try.

I am in Sherwood, and I believe you're in Wynnum (aren't you?), so maybe if we were going to do that we could find a half way point somewhere.

Cheers Hamish 🙂

Hopefully I can find a time to drop some over. I will keep you posted after I have a meeting with them this week.

Hey Super,

They feed them on food waste. I didn't see anything eating the burlyed larvae and it went straight past a few. They did eat the bread that was right next to the maggots however.

Maybe they have an unpleasant smell for fish if they just ignore them. I would try injuring some before putting them in the water to see if their blood interests the fish
