Just purely on the white tip on the dorsal and very dark smaller spiky fin just in front of main dorsal I would suggest black banded AJ as these are not features of a sambo but I’m not a qualified ichthyologist. Sure you all had much more fun than I did today regardless!

Of the two I think the Samson fish looks slightly more like the one Tom caught. I remember the most distinctive feature was it had a really snub nose and it was wide at the front. I’m not really sure if was either of them.

No unfortunately, I ran into some issues with my ute the night before, I put a bandaid on her a while back, but it came off, now she has to go to hospital to have an operation

Hey Greg, it might be worth checking to see if your hull has been coated in what’s commonly referred to as fish repellent, I’ve heard a few not so successful skippers talking about it lately.... just a thought

No. Already checked that. It’s just the ones that exceed legal limits that don’t like my boat.

Hmmmmm, are you implying that first, one must be a legend to boat a legal fish in the bay? hahaha

It's probably a black banded amberjack, but it is difficult to tell conclusively from the photo. You need to be able to see the fin rays clearly and the teeth.
