Evening all, 

I had a couple of hours free before work this arvo so I tried my luck at catching dinner land based. I got a tailor early on but it seemed that there wasn't many of those around. I also got a small trev about 35cm which I decided to let go. I was immediately rewarded by the fishing gods next cast when my samaki slash 55 gets pack attacked by some solid GTs across the surface. This kept me interested for the next hour or so trying to find them again. Dozens and dozens of casts went by. I usually only fish this landbased spot for 15 mins before moving on as it seems to be a case of fish either being there or not. However having seen the chunky geets cruising around definitely kept me interested for longer this time.

Eventually my lure got smacked (60g chrome this time) and immediately knew it was one of the proper ones I'd seen before. I tightened up as much as was safe on my 30lb set up but was still going to require a bit of luck and skill to angle the fish away from the rocky bommies that jut out everywhere.

Well, I got lucky and with a bit of rock hopping I steered the fish onto a ledge. Pretty stoked on the light gear to get the job done! Man they are an incredibly powerful fish. 

70cm and a few delicious meals to come. Thanks Mr Trevally! Very grateful. Good feeling after so many donut sessions recently

Would have been interesting landing that nice fish on the rocks.

Thankyou! I joined AFO 8 years ago as a beginner and asked many questions and started learning a lot (as you're doing too!). Spent lots of time not catching and still do, and sometimes it's bloody hard work. Might sound silly but I'm a bit sore from yesterday with over 100 max effort casts to get the lure in the right spot followed by a high speed retrieve; non stop for 2 hours and running all over the rocks. Quality fish can be tough. I guess the secret is simply 'hard work'

Definitely, would be mostly XL ones up there... looks like the most intense form of fishing I reckon!

Nice one mate. Glad it is working out for you. 

I miss fishing at Straddie. I was lucky enough to be there one week when the southerly was blowing its tits off. The only spot that I could fish was near the sand hill between Frenchman's and Deadman's. There was a deep hole there at the time and I pulled a stack of fish out of it. Mulloway, Trevs and tailor. So much fun pulling fish off the stones and its great hearing about your adventures. In the spirit of POIDH.... The pick looks more dangerous than it was. 

 

I am going over there on Saturday but sadly not for a fishing trip. The Moreton Bay Foundation is having a luncheon at the Little Ship Club and I am presenting some stuff we are doing with shellfish reef restoration.

Amazing pic! Always somewhere to fish. Keen to have a cast with you when you're over here for fishing purposes.

 Got another 70cm yesterday after a few casts, smashed my lure at my feet. Got a wind knot after that and went home

Just now off deadies, same spot as the last few. Was probs about 90cm though and reefed me. There's a compromise with gear isn't there; the lighter the more eats but get dusted by those rarer large models. I use 80lb at the gorge though but it's been pretty quiet lately. Might have another go this arvo

yeah when I used to go with Angus, I never committed to throwing the big stuff off deadies/frenchies. Would get distracted on the light stuff, but should have committed to going with the big GT Popping gear. 

Got absolutely railed off the gorge on 2500 gear. Stripped the line in 1 run and visibly smoked coming off the spool. Suspect it was a GT because we spotted a school cruising in tight but never got to actually see what was hooked on the other side. I want my revenge....

Yeah caught up with him the other day! He did pretty well on the light stuff. I was using my usual 50lb gear for around there and didn't get a touch, however I'm pretty content at missing the smaller models for these nice medium sized fish when they are around

The biggest I've eaten was 80, a little bit watery and mushy. I've had 3x 70cms now that have been great, but the 50cm ones are primo. Probs would vary between fish though, some get parasites when larger apparently and there is a small risk of ciguatera also. Will probably release the larger ones over 70 in the future

I have eaten loads of large ones in FIJI. They cook the bejesus out of them and they are dry and a bit yuck. You need loads of coconut milk, lemon juice and onion to moisten them.

Alright, I have heard that about the bigger ones (or that they go terribly dry). I googled what size an average GT goes into maturity (because I thought maybe only juveniles would taste good and when they matured something in the fish may change making them like this) but it said they go into maturity at about 50cm-60cm. 

A parasite would be my best guess at why they taste bad when bigger... And the last thing you want is ciguatera.

Hiya.  I was reading a while ago about a parasite that turned fish mushy not long after they die.  Sounds dreadful.
