A Day In The Bay

Got an invite to head out with @GregOug, son Tom and @Kat on Saturday. The plan was to leave at gentleman's hours and suss out some marks Greg had been working on. So a bit of an explore and hope day.

The first couple of marks showed a small amount of structure but no fish holding so we moved on and around finding a lot of the spots were no secret, with boats already chancing their luck.

The bay was glassed out and at one of the vacant spots we tried, a solitary dolphin paid us a visit. Kat and Tom both got some footage of it taking Greg's food offerings. Interestingly it bumped away a frozen squid and a frozen pillie but was happy to eat the defrosted ones. I thought afterwards the dolphin was probably expecting us to feed it fish that we'd caught, so it either had misplaced confidence in us or there were fish around to be caught.

We discovered some new ground towards the north of Moreton that looked promising but the weather turned on a five cent piece and the bay chopped up accordingly. We then trolled for a while without luck before the whitecaps appeared to our north so we decided to head for home. We stopped along the way at some nice looking bottom and had a quick drift and lost some bait but no hookups.

We crossed the Brisbane bar and it was as curly as I've seen it. We were surprised to see a small tinny heading out with two onboard. With the weather forecast to worsen it makes you wonder what it was that saw them taking such a risk.

It was my first outing with Greg on his boat. What a weapon it is. All those ponies at the ready make for an exhilarating ride. Plenty of room for the 4 of us. We had a good day and shared a lot of laughs and story telling to make up for the lack of fish. A top day on the water.

Hi Brian, Greg, and Kat

Good one, despite the lack off fish seems like you had a solid day out.

Shame you didn't get to fish those marks North of Moreton because the wind decided to pick up.

What were you mainly trolling for? Mackerel or Tuna?

Hamish, we were trolling for anything that would take our lures! We aren’t very fussy.

Thanks @ellicat. I had a great day! No fish but that’s nothing new. We’ll keep trying. And Tom got his first look at some decent bay chop. He handled it well. We will definitely do it again. Tom is quite keen on trolling for pelagics now after our tall stories of past catches. Thanks Brian and Kat for coming along. You made it a great day out.

Hamish, you may have to do some research on rigging baits like garfish, mullet etc for trolling. I think we have the trolling bug now but I’m too old to learn anything new. Lol.

Yes @GregOug another big thanks from me.  It was a fantastic day.  I had the best view of how Tom was handling those swells and he did a great job.  Very surprising for his first time in those conditions.  I enjoyed everyone's company again and didn't have to swim in with the boat this time. Pity @AUS-BNE-FISHO wasn't with us we might have come back with a fish or two

@ellicat you forgot to mention that those two young fellas didn't even have the good sense to be wearing their lifejackets!  Did you check the Death Notices this morning?

My favourite part of the day was feeding the dolphin. My footage wasn't that great but I have still been showing everyone all day

And I sat down way too much so have sunburned knees lol.  Next time I hope there is more standing involved (with a rod in my hand) lol. (and no dirty jokes please).

Here is the footage.  My other footage is 11min of the camera looking at my feet and Greg or Tom's feet when they walked past me in the boat and about 3 min of a real close up view of the palm of my hand.  Turns out I was pressing stop instead of start and start instead of stop on my other videos

@GregOug your boat is too nice to get fish blood on it! But if you do want to, try targeting a single species each time you go out And don’t change your mind cos it’s a bit slow. Start with more abundant fish like winter whiting or bream or flathead then you can move up to reefies and pelagics. That will give you the best chance of catching something rather than lots of chances of catching nothing. 
the best fishermen and women I know Have a plan before they go out Based on weather, time of year and recent fishing reports and stick to it.They honestly believe they will catch their target fish rather than “anything will do”.  It sure looks fun zooming around in your boat but try to limit your moves - you can’t catch anything with the lines in the boat! 
I’m sure success is just around the corner..

Allow me to indulge in an analogy. Say you were given the opportunity to photograph the Sports illustrated swimsuit calendar in its heyday (1996-1998). There are 12 amazing swimsuits to photograph and a handful of quite plain clothes horses (supermodels) wearing them. To have the best chance of a successful shoot, do you line all the suits+ models up and shoot them all together Willy Nilly? Or do you focus on one at a time and really study their curves, patterns, behaviours and eating habits and  spend a little bit of time observing and waiting for the right moment? It would be no good offering Heidi a nice cold glass of bubbles With a strawberry in it if you knew she didn’t drink champagne cos the bubbles go to her head and strawberries cos the seeds get stuck in her perfect teeth. Try swooping in with a nice bottle of chilled Fiji water at the end of an arduous sand session and maybe a comment about how the blue water brings out the azure in her eyes...that will get you the best shot at the shot with her, then you can move on to the less easy ones
