Best Fishing Practices

Drop Bear

Recommended Posts

Hey AFO brains trust.

I need to come up with some ideas for some short videos on best fishing practices.

I have been given

  1. Be smart- Always know the fishing rules and regulations for the waterway your fishing and the difference it can make
  2. Take the time to learn about fishing gear so you make the right choices for each fishing situation particularly fishing deep water
  1. Have the right gear-Knotless landing nets and de-hooking tools plus release weights for fishing deep water
  1. Be quick – If you are going to release it, once a native fish is hooked, minimise both capture and handling time and exposure to air
  1. Be gentle and aware-If a fish needs to be removed from the water, use wet hands, always support its weight and never take a photo hanging by the jaw
  1. Know the season-When there on the nest, give them a rest
  1. Know your species – slot sizes length limits for a reason

The other one I am thinking about is Ikejimi and best fish handling practices for food.

You are all clever, what other best fishing practices are there?

Hi Robbie

I certainly agree with the weather one - maybe something that talks about how to know when to not go out and that it is not worth risking it for a fish if the weather is rough as anything.

Junky makes an excellent point also - it would be lovely if everyone disposed of there things safely and responsibly.

The ones you've listed so far are great as well. There are a couple more I could add though -

1) Try to kill fish humanely if keeping (brain spike, Ikejimi, etc)

2) Only take what you need - do not bag out on 35cm bream just because they are on the bite. Try to catch a couple feeds and then maybe try for something different or go catch and release

3) Try to stay safe when fishing night time land based in some locations. Sometimes you can run into a creep or dodgy person (probably applies to more teens and kids than adults) but it is good to have a mate with you.

Cheers Hamish 🙂
