The Dreaded Donut

Got up at 5 this morning was halfway through coffee number 2 and young Scotty calls to cancel . So I figured well I've had coffee I can't go back to bed so I grabbed the burley log and went on my kamakazee mission a trip that normally takes 15 minutes each way took 45 minutes each way very uncomfortable but got the job done and went home. Around 12 I decided I can go chase jacks in my sheltered Jack spot so I grabbed the cast net and managed to get a dozen herring and 4 mullet. Got to my spot right on dead tide just as I put the anchor down there was a big surface break right under the mangrove branch I got as bit excited and put the hook in the first mullet a bit to quick and killed it so I grabbed another and threw it out about 10 meters up from the surface break. After a long 20 minute wait something finally nailed my mullet I managed to get it away from the branches then the anchor rope but on it's final run it managed to find the boat mooring.then everything went quiet. It wasn't until there was movement in the tide I got my next hit at least I got to see this one it was a small trevally about 40cm which managed to spit the hook out right at the boat. After that the small stuff moved in. It was still a great afternoon although I landed nothing I realised were lucky to have places like this where we can hide from the wind and still have a fish

If it was only about catching fish I don't think I'd go as often.

Shame about losing the fish though.

Yeah my last few attempts have been a bit ordinary but still happy enough sitting out there having a bit of time out

Shame that their were none landed like ellicat mentioned it’s good when you hook up though . I really wish their were jacks where I’m from they fight really good on 8-10lb braid I really enjoy catching sooty grunter on 6lb to .hopefully next time you go out the action is a little hotter

Yeah I was fishing pretty light 6lb braid with 15 lb fluro carbon leader couldn't put to much hurt on him . I think light tackle is much more fun than skull dragging stuff to the boat. Never caught sooties before what are they like ?

Sooties are good fun but can be fussy on what they eat I’ve only targeted them once and managed to catch a few but my PB is 25cm not that big I find sooty grunter like deep holes or spots next to hard running current on hot days but generally over 25 degrees will be fine .on the day I caught them I used a few different lures until I used a zman slim swim 2.5 in opening night with a 1/8 size 1 jig head head they only liked that lure on the day I found they were super aggressive I just slowed rolled the plastics .soon as the lure hit the bottom they usually pick it up but for some reason unlike most fish they pick them up and run with them instead of dropping them when they feel the weight sooty grunter just don’t care about the weight of the jig head I even seen one come up when I was retrieving my lure and just smashed it they are unlike any other fish I’ve seen they are so aggressive I was using 6lb braid 6lb fluorocarbon leader 3-8lb bream surface rod and 1000 Stradic 10/10 would recommend even ones around 20-30cm put up a great fight their like bream but super aggressive My 25cm sooty grunter I caught fought like a legal sized blackfish/Luderick or similar to like a legal tailor it’s kind of hard to explain they are very different to most fish I’ve caught on plastics .I’ve only caught them once when I found a nice spot to target them so I don’t have that much experience with them but I can definitely tell you they are a very good fish to target I caught around 7 on the day I can’t remember if that’s right I might check the old thread I wrote from a few months ago when I caught them
