I am looking for a new rod...

Hey can someone recommend me a rod that roughly fits this description...

I am looking for a rod that is around 9-10 ft that can handle 80lb of braid with the aciton being heavy and extra heavy. I am also happy to look into rods that are taller than 10 ft but comes in 3 pieces (due to restrictions in travel and storage).

I am planning to do some heavy duty fishing off the rocks and beaches. So far I haven't been able to find a suitable rod.

Hi Tae, you didn't say if you are after a spinning or overhead rod, if it is spinning have a look at the Shimano Anthem SW GT 792 popping rod,  it is a PE8-10, 7'9", it joins at the top of the handle as it is a 2 piece, lure weight 100-250gm, I just recently added one of these to my collection, haven't used it yet apart from a few casts in the yard, so far so good but can't tell you how it performs when connected to a fish, or anything much more about it than the spec's. I did look at about 6 other rods when I bought it and it seemed the best one for me, when connected to a Spinfisher SSVI8500LL reel it has minimal line slap on the first guide ring when casting a lure.

If you are after a overhead type you will have to do more research, if going for 37kg line on overhead, I prefer a short rod as leverage will be against you on a long rod. Having said that, YouTube has many videos of guys using very long rods on bigger overheads mainly overseas, but even then they have trouble keeping the rod up due to leverage. You may have to keep watching them in case some of them state what type of rods they are using or just message them and ask. You most likely wont find anyone in Oz who has them either and you may have to import them if you still want to go down that track.

Also try looking at shark fishing videos as some of those guys also use longer rods with big overheads.

Size of the 2 pieces of mine are 84.5cm for the bottom and 159cm for the top part,  2307cm assembled

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Ed.

I had some time to kill so I started to look at some videos of land based shark fishing with overhead reels, the only rod  name I could find was Barrett Rods which was being used by a guy in W.A and was made by a custom rod maker in the US but it will cost you an arm and a leg to get one over to Oz, About US$350+ for the rod, then you have the dollar conversion rate, shipping and finally you will most likely have to pay the 10% GST on the total. They do look like a nice rod but you will be paying for it, not even sure if they do one in a 2 piece or not. Here is the link:

Found another spinning rod made in Oz.

I think that the sort of rod you are after may only be available in a custom build but could be hard to find one locally.

Missing At Sea is a good Aussie company but I don’t think any of their rods are made in Australia. Edit: Just looked at their site and they don’t stock rods anymore...

If you are thinking going custom try giving Peter Flor from Florless Rods a call. He’s down near Jacobs Well and a good bloke to boot

I just rang the Fishingatsea.com.au company and the blanks are out of  stock at the moment but they expect to get more blanks from Japan in about 3-5 months, asked about prices and the guy there said probably about the $500 range for the 8ft PE10 2 piece with Silicon Carbide guides, which is a very good price  for a custom build using SiC guides.

I must resist, I must resist, I must resist, I must resist,........................ I do not need another rod..........well maybe just one more! 🤨🤣

So Tae if you can hang on a bit it may be worth your while.

Cheers

I visit the website, no information on the rods.

Hi, if you are referring to the Missingatsea.com.au website, they do not have any info on the rods on the site as they won't have  any more blanks for a couple of months, but if you want to get more info on the rods you can call them on PH: 02 6680 8409 like I did.

Cheers

I don't think that the rod will break however it may not do what Tae wants to do with it, I have seen an image of an Ugly Stik bent into a circle without breaking, from that point of view they are good and unbreakable but only Tae knows what he wants out of a rod. Based on his  desire to have a long rod 9-10ft+ length with a heavy to extra heavy action to fish off the rocks and beaches, I will assume that he will be casting heavy weights/bait/lures and if fishing off the rocks I think that he would like to have some extra clearance from the waters edge or else to lift up a heavy fish from the rock edge.

So I think that a 12' 12kg rated Ugly Stik may be too bendy, having said that I have not used one of them, so I may be wrong to assume that it will bend into a U shape when lifting a heavy fish up and sort of defeat the purpose of getting some decent clearance from the waters/rock edge. I do have a 9ft custom Ugly Guttsbut Tiger Stik and that is quite bendy so also not really suitable for that purpose. The 12ft surf rods use a thicker (wider) blank so will probably be different in the bend, and so you would have to physically test them, but I would still be surprised if they didn't also bend quite heavily with a heavy weight.

For my rock fishing, I made an overhead 8ft rod out of a Synderglas M3 blank which a 15-24kg  and that also bends with a 10kg drag but not as bad as the Ugly's do, so I do get some extra reach with it, the Shimano Anthem SW which I recently got is a PE8-10 and I loaded it up this morning on full locked drag (approx 18kg supposedly as I haven't measured the drag yet) with the Penn SSVI8500LL and that bends less again and it may be more suitable for what Tae wants, but that was hard yakka trying to hold that much drag for any length of time on a 7'9" long rod,  I would hate to think what it would feel like with an extra 3 ft.

Bear in mind that you can't high stick those like you can with the fiberglass or composite rods  as they have a very high graphite content and may snap so lifting a heavy fish off the rocks up may not be possible but guiding a big fish around the rock wall would be quite doable. My 20kg Ugly 7ft, also bends quite heavily, which is a common theme with the Ugly's, they are unbreakable but bendy so distance from the water is reduced under heavy load.

Having said all the above the only Ugly stick that doesn't bend like the others that I have found is the USG-SP561XXH but that is a very short game rod and that is very stiff, even with 25kg of drag on it, I only managed to put a bit  of a bend on it, that surprised the hell out of me, (that was with using a full harness and gimble belt). If they made that blank longer you would not be able to lift it up though with that sort of drag.

So speaking of Tae, he hasn't been around for a while since that post, but he is the only one who can say what use he wants a rod to do.
