queensland Mud Island fish ID please

I caught this at Mud island Monday. I have never seen one before and it is not recognised by my Fish ID app. It was around 25cm long and released to puzzle another fisherman. Tally for the morning was 6 grass Sweetlip, one bream and one whiting.

Maybe some sort of Trumpeter? It almost looks like a baby Barra.

How did you catch a whiting at Mud ?

On a third look, like Hamish said, it has similarities to a juvenile barra.

A mate just texted and said its a black sand Bass. I think he may be right.

As to the whiting, it took a flesh bait on a 2/0 hook and was 28cm winter whiting.

Unusual capture for Mud Isl. As others have said that is a sand bass. 

 

@ellicat - not uncommon to get big diver whiting around Mud Isl.

@Techman - if you get a decent diver whiting on a future trip they make awesome live baits for bigger snapper, grassies, cod, flathead and mulloway. And if nothing takes the livie you can still eat the bait!

What's the best way to hook a diver whiting as a live bait? Through the jaw?

Small bite-size specimens I hook through the bottom jaw and out through the nose. Larger ones through the shoulder, avoiding the lateral line.

I once used a whiting as a livie using the shoulder method. It was out for 3 days straight (aerator in a bucket overnight) and I released it alive  on the 3rd day, amazed.

Definitely fishing in the wrong spot... and for three whole days???

You got that right - it was in the river. Once again I failed on the thready hunt.
