queensland Bribie Passage - 18/04/21

My brother and i hired a boat out for the day on Sunday for a days fishing on the passage. Plan was to collect yabbies and fish a bunch of flats and drop offs for whiting and flathead, as well as throw plastics as we drifted. Collected heaps of yabbies (more than we needed as we let a lot go at the end of the day) and motored up the passage looking for a spot to fish. We ended up fishing at poverty point, misson point and a bunch of flats in the passage for a really poor days fishing. we ended up with a handful of legal whiting, 2 tarwhine, 2 bream one squire and a flounder. i cant believe that for 8 hours fishing we could find a single flathead. i didn't get a touch on any plastic (zman minnowz, holt production swim prawns, squidgy flick baits, zman slim swimz) which was very weird to me. i fished hard all day with plastics and bait for very little reward. Was a very long day with alot of waiting in between bites. Still nice to be on the water

Towards the mouth is was very clear

the further up the passage towards mission was still very dirty

Nice one mate. Annoying when the flatties dont play the game but glad you got a nice mixed bag.

i was out at bribe on Sunday as  well, i got 2 size flat head on a paddle tail and a size parrot fish, ill happy say where i caught them.

I think all the flathead have moved to my neck of the woods!  I am catching them without trying - and so is everyone fishing around me...not complaining.  

Yeah fishing around MacLeay and Karragarra island was also very dirty in the weekend.  Cleaner up by peel.  

How was the hire boat?

I love the Bribie passage. I haven't fished there for 2 years however I have caught so many awesome fish there over the last 20 years.... Been going there since I was 12.

the top X is good at High tide and the bottom X is good at low tide (but be careful not to get stuck like i did) just keep casting a colourful paddle tail to the bank and retrieve slowly.  And you should get a flat head.

What is poverty creek camping like? 

Would it make a good spot for a AFO social event?

That sounds like a great days fishing. Where I live (Yeppoon Qld) you could not get that in 12 months worth of solid fishing effort. So to get that in just 8 hrs is brilliant I reckon.

The missus and I went past that spot about 5-6 years ago on a little drive on the Island, seems like a nice spot however having said that the toilet facilities when we used them were a bit "on the nose" if you know what I mean, with the added bonus of the cloud of "dunny flies" hanging around the bowl, really put the missus off. I must admit that was many years ago, so the toilets may have been upgraded since then.

I don't remember seeing any sort of boat ramp there though, from what I remember, there were quite a few  mangrove patches around the waters edge and it seemed to be muddy and shallowish.  As it was a long time ago I may have misjudged it as I only have been there once.

It gets very shallow there on low tide... Midgies are pretty bad normally too.

Man we were in some midgeis the other day. Tingalpa Creek boat ramp (the one near Lota Creek).

They were thicker than I have ever seen. Time for a trip to Fraser I reckon.

Don't now Tingalpa very well. I am from Ipswich and only ever really ventured to Redcliffe/Scarborough boat ramp and head to Bribie Island. Apart from when I worked at Ormiston College I used to head down to Wellington pint for a flick after work sometimes. Fraser sounds like a plan. I would love to take the kids camping but they are 6&9 and dog mad. Dingoes and two kids in a tent hmmmmmm

I think my brother may have taken a high school group (he's a teacher also) on a canoeing trip to Poverty Point @Drop Bear and camped for a night or two. I'll check to confirm and report back.
