Motor flushing

Hi all,

Being old school, I always flush my outboard by attaching muffs and running it at idle for around fifteen minutes. Since I got my new Mercury I have done that but have also ran water through it with the motor off via the hose attachment on new motors. Do I really need to do this as well, if I run it with muffs attached, or are muffs outdated and is the attachment with motor off the way to go?

cheers

Greg

Good question Greg. When I picked up my new Suzuki from John Eadie (Suzuki guru) he advised me to do both - I'm slightly fuzzy on the specifics (and am no mechanic) but think he said you need to run it with the muffs for at least 8 minutes or so to ensure the thermostat opens up and to also flush it using the attachment because it produces more water pressure and blasts any sand, etc out. So guessing they both help in slightly different ways but worth doing both.

Yeah I flush my motor with the fitting just to blow the crap out of the hose. Then hook up the muffs.

Actually I hadn't really thought about which to do first but that makes sense - I'll have to check my manual in case it says something. I think I just did with the mufflers first as that's what I'm used to, and then did the new step (attachment) second. Will review 🙂.
