Winter Fishing Classic

Hi all

Well after some polls and threads to decide, the species and time for the Winter Fishing Classic has been decided (pretty well, anyways). If you have any objections, feel free to debate/discuss in HERE. 

The time this fishing competition would run for is between the First to Thirty-First of July. This is because:

A) The middle month of Winter.

B) Two weeks for Snapper Fishing before the close.

The species this competition would have for target options would be - 

1. Snapper - 

   Size: 73CM

   Weight: N/A

   Location: Southern Moreton Bay Islands

   Category Being Entered: Snapper

   Angler or Angling Team: @Allnighter

   Special Symbol: Valid in photo

2. Mulloway (Jewfish) and Black Jewfish - 

3. Bream (all species) - 

   Size: 30CM

   Weight: N/A

   Location: Brisbane River

   Category Being Entered: Bream (all        species) 

   Angler or Angling Team: The @AUS-BNE-FISHO Campaign 

   Special Symbol - Valid in photo

4. Groupers and Cods -

   Size: 50CM

   Weight: N/A

   Location: Port of Brisbane 

   Category being entered: Cods and Groupers

5. Grass Emperor -

Here is a justification for these species - 

1. These are quite a commonly targeted sportfish in the Winter Month, especially along the East Coast of Australia. Many people have access to fish for them, and many do. There is a closed season to be mindful of, occurring from the 15^th  to 15^th (July-August). 

2. These species are said to bite well in the Winter months, and once again seem like a popular sportsfish. They taste good and get big, making them a good target species . This category will also be for the Mulloway's Northern counterpart, the Black jewfish. If fishing for these keep in mind, on the East Coast, these should be released as they have reached their commercial limit. 

3. The common Bream - everyone knows these! Probably one of Australia's easiest fish to catch, and tasty too, the bream is a good fish for boaties or land based anglers. They breed in Winter meaning they are fat and chunky, ready to be caught.

4. This category can be for anything from a Murray Cod to a Eastern Blue Grouper.

5. This is rather common and tasty (or said to be), and targeted by many. 

6. While you must be mindful of a closed season, it is open to fishing in impoundments. They row up and bite hard in this time. 

7 & 8 - Both generic and widely targeted species in Australia. 

9. Another freshwater fish to provide variety.

10. Big, hard pulling fish, so anyone who targets them has the option of getting them too.

11. This could be prawns or sand crabs - best crustacean catch wins this!

12. Popular Winter target fish.

13. Anything!

I’m in to .although I don’t know if I’m gonna manage to get much fishing time in as the closest decent fishing spot for me is 40-50 minute drive as the floods wrecked all my local spots damaged wharfs and jetties ruined water quality and many more issues basically ruined my whole river system  for at least a few months . Hopefully I can manage to get a fishing sesh in at the spot where I did my last report at

Good on you Hamish. Count me in. Could the mulloway include the northern species (black Jew)? I am heading to Darwin in July and hoping to target these on a charter in Darwin Harbour.

Thanks for organising the comp Hamish. I’m in. However, It is noted that you have omitted the three fish species I have caught this year - Tuna, Catfish and the mighty Deep Sea Toadfish. I totally understand however. You are from the southside, and hence concerned about the superior Northsiders dominating the comp. Best that the comp be rigged at the beginning to give you Southsiders somewhat of a chance.

I should have asked that before entering. Since it is Winter Classic I entered., I live in Childers. So fish Woodgate and Bundaberg. But come to Ipswich weekly so sometime head to Bribie Island.

Sorry, first of all I’ve been hardly active lately, school is very busy at the moment so I really need to catch up on all the AFO. Like Greg said, it’s anywhere in Australia you can catch the fish!
