Bargain hunting

Hi all,

Came across a 1 day only sale and thought it would benefit someone who was in the game to buy some new gear so thought I'd create a post.

I was also thinking this could be a thread for others to share other bargains/sales that they come across in future that might help others. Please keep in mind site rules around advertising etc so no self plugging or spamming.

The old Stradic ci4 is getting fairly cheap now been seeing a few around $200-$240 but there’s ones are even cheaper

Hi all,

Not sure if it is just at the Virginia BCF or all of them but they are selling heaps of lures for $5 each until 28/2, including Berkeley Shimma Shads, Savage Heavy jigs and the ones that I don’t know what they are called. You know the ones though. They have a very heavy round head with tons of stuff streaming below and some small but heavy gauge deadly looking hooks imbedded in them. Heaps of other lures too.

No. They are heavy, around 130 grams plus and meant for snapper. Meant to look like an octopus I think.

Perhaps that's why Bec moved you to an ISLAND .......... although she may have underestimated your tenacity ...... I'm assuming they'd DELIVER to your island .........

I ate stingray the other day. Delicious. I made a hand spear from a long stick and added an old spear from a spear gun. They are everywhere on the flats on the incoming tide.

I’ve had Ray before. If you cut the flaps into circles it’s hard to distinguish from scallops without the roe. In fact, my trawler skipper many years ago said that most fish shops used skate in place of scallops.

Regardless, I’ve been eyeing off a recipe from my Rick Stein ‘Fish and Shellfish’ book for skate for ages. I’ve attached it here. I hope I’m not breaking copyright. At least I am attributing it to him. I also highly recommend buying a copy of the book. Every recipe I’ve tried so far has been superb!

Look out stingrays anywhere near North Straddie, a Drop Bear is on the prowl ......... . Yep, my kiwi aunty used to (probably still does) cut the flaps into scallop sized chunks and swore you couldn't tell the difference when done right.

Years ago I was inspired to keep a ray after watching a cooking segment on one of those lifestyle shows where a Noosa chief was preparing and cooking a ray. I made such a mess of butchering the poor animal that I tossed the mangled bits into the bin and never tried again. I need to take some lessons from you @Drop Bear. 

@GregOug, I am a big Rick Stein fan and have a few of his recipe books. I will keep an eye out for that one.
