queensland Rainbow channel 14/8/21

[Another Wazza]

I decided after hearing Sam’s confirmation the other day that the schoolies were in the Rainbow, to give them a crack.

I managed to convince my mum to come along and enjoy a day on the water too, she wasn’t that keen to start with, she said I leave too early in the morning for her liking, so we settled on a 9am departure from Raby Bay, needles to say I had to park out on the road as the car park was packed.

We launched the super yacht and cruised towards the Rainbow in a very glassy bay, I pulled up just short of the Welsby light and began a drift back down the channel, unweighted pillies on 5 O gangs is what we used, whilst drifting we started a friendly competition of who would be crowned the mackerel master of the day, I got on the board early with a nice 68cm model, she soon followed with a 55cm, it was neck and neck there for a while, but I assured her if it went down to the wire, we would have to go by who’s catch came in with the longest overall length.

We ended up boating 4 on the first drift, then cruised back up for round 2, I got a breather as she got snipped twice, and dropped another, then I came home strong landing 3 in quick succession, the boat was looking more and more like a crime scene at the end of the 2nd drift, so we pulled stumps and headed for home.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got back to the ramp, the longest part of the retrieval was walking to the ute, It was a good end to a great day, and although my mum isn’t a keen fisher person, she thoroughly enjoyed the outing.

Good on you for getting your mum out for a session. Sounds like it was a quick one.

Happy to see those results too, as I just organised a session there later this week, if the weather plays ball.

Murder indeed Brian, It was an arduous task scrubbing the blood off the decks, the little suckers sprayed it all over the joint, I tried my best to clean as we went but I just couldn’t keep up.

Nice work Wazza. Glad you got out. Those are some nice mackerel!

Hi Steve, there wasn’t that many at all, 2 or 3 up where we were, and a few more around Amity, there were plenty bobbing around Peel and Myora though.

Awesome session mate! I did 0 from 2 today. And lost a few livies to the resident dolphins also. They are incredibly talented to pick the herring off the hooks. Amazing to watch really. Might try away from amity next time. Thanks for the report

Thanks for the tip, went out yesterday and got a couple of schoolies, spent the whole day on the bay it was amazing conditions

Got a few in the Rainbow this week too. One went over 70cm. Word is out! Have heard of them being caught in the usual haunts of the Rous and 4 beacons too...

Trollers, drifters, anchorers and paravaners. Did not see one landed today as we spent hours searching for the suckers in the Rous and Rainbow channels. Sent my mate home with only 2 average diver whiting after 9 hours on the water.

Next time...

Good luck. They're probably still there, just had a bad day for us for some reason.

Went later than planned as had my brother over at my parents so ended up just drifting east of Green for a couple of cuttlefish then moved in closer and anchored up hoping for some snapper but struggled with the tidal flow (bit out of practice, had forgotten just how hard it flows on big tides and we unfortunately were fishing the middle of the tide).

Moved a couple of times and was marginally better but only got a couple of very small ones and a small cat shark so like you, went home with our tail between our tails between our legs .  
 

Still good to be out though, saw a couple of pods of dolphins. Also some a nice glass boat on a flat tray truck at the ramp when we arrived - another victim of the old unhitching too early trick ... caused a bit of congestion but we got lucky .
