queensland 2 weeks on Fraser Island

Just got back after  spending two weeks  camped on the main beach at Fraser Island with a few old mates. We were lucky to score a top camp site just north of the Cathedrals right behind a nice little gutter which we thought should produce a few tailor. The first 2 days we struggled against a poor moon and a bit of weed .But  after the moon waned off full and the weed disappeared and the fishing went off with tailor biting all day every for the next 10 days. I ended up tagging 200 odd fish and keeping a good feed on most days.Needless to say this year was one of the best years fish wise I’ve spent on the island in the last 48 years of visiting the island.We got a lot of fish around 38 to 45cm , and quite a few 50cm plus fish. All fish were caught on 65 and 85gram Raiders using an fast tapper surf rod with an old Mitchell 499 spinning reel . I’ve attached a few photos and a short video.

Hey Neil, looks like you had some good fishing there, what part of Frazier were those pics of the Mangrove trees taken from?

The mangroves are on the southern side of Wathumba creek.

Sand fly infested yabby bank at low tide , but not a bad little spot at high tide.-unfortunately road access to the northern side of Wathumba creek has been cut off , pity because it was a beautiful spot to visit.

We used camp there regularly many years ago, just on the western side of that little creek. Why can’t you get there by vehicle any more? We used to cross from Orchid Beach, cross Wathumba along the southern side at low tide and head back home down the western beach, crossing Awinya Creek and then following the inland tracks from there. Can’t you get to the Southern side of Wathumba from either way now?

Sorry. Misread. Thought you were talking about the southern side being inaccessible.

This is music to my ears with my looming trip up there. It looks like you had a great time and some top photos. I'm going to flick slugs, stick baits and some pillies at those hungry fish in a few weeks.
