Went to western arm where the rain varied between torrential to a light drizzle. We put up the umbrella as soon as we launched and went straight to the tip of Ians island and tied up between 2 trees. The bass were hungry and willing but unfortunately so were the barred grunter. We ran out of bait and decided it was too dangerous to do the shrimp traps as the trees tend to drop branches when they are wet. We ended up back at the ramp at 10am with 58 bass and one tandan and the eagle enjoyed a feed of barred grunter. Had to run the bilge pump a few times to get rid of the rain water.

That's a lot of water from the bilge ! Plenty of reward for sticking it out.

You certainly are dedicated Ray. Amazing how much water can get into an open boat in heavy rain. What size pump do you have there?

1000 gph in stern and same in bow. If fishing 4 up water collects in bow first otherwise with 2 up stern first and in stern under way. pumps also for quickly clearing boat when forget to screw in drain plugs.

Are Barred Grunter not good eating?

They  are too small to bother with and do not grow to much more than 20cm in local waters. Up north they grow a little larger. They have been introduced into local dams by hatcheries who did not have correct hygiene procedures and are considered a pest fish. They are a popular aquarium fish but are very agressive to other fish.

These are a fresh water pest species @Kat, not the same as the delicious barred or spotted grunter (more correctly javelin fish) you get in the salty stuff.

Ah now I understand.  Caught some spotted Grunter in the creek for the first time a couple of nights ago.  To be honest it wasn't as delicious as I was told it would be. But still a good feed and beggars can't be choosers.  Unfortunately the BF clicked on the wrong javelin fish by mistake and we threw back a few fish that could have been released to the Esky Thanks for the clarification

I reckon if you did them like the Polynesians or Vietnamese do, whole floured and fried with chillies, shallots and some spice, they would be delicious... but hard to get a fillet off haha.

Nice fishing mate. We were out in it too but on the rusty water doing some oyster farming. We have a Ph.D. student that is running some tests on our shellfish at the moment. Interesting stuff. 

I hope to have some oyster reefs in the Logan next year. Fingers crossed.
