Hey everyone, just wondering best flathead lures, and how to use them. Also, recommend some sorts of areas I should be fishing. (I am in the sunshine coast at the moment) THANKS!

my go to is a zman 3 inch minnowz in electric chicken

100mm squidgee wriggler in bloodworm is also good. i like to fish for them on the flats where there are drop offs into deeper water. for the sunny coast, golden beach is a great spot for that.

Thanks @christophagus I actually have the minnowz in that colour- does time of day affect the productivity for these fish, as I managed a 78cm specimen early morning, however haven't caught anything after fishing around 12-2pm (run out tides).

78 is a cracking fish. they can be caught at all times of day. although i do prefer morning and late afternoon

^{I’m partial to the old  4inch Zerek Hot Legs , any colour.}

^{In saying that ,I recon Flathead will eat most lures dragged past there noses. I don’t think it matters too much which lure you use , just use something your confident with .}

^{I usually drift along likely looking ledges  slow skipping the lure along with the current. Flathead lay heads facing into the current waiting for a feed.
I stop and spot lock at  drains ,snags, points , run throughs,visible bait etc.anywhere there’s a potential feed for a flathead your likely to find one , if you put a few casts in .}

Great work Oscar. 78cm is a horse.

The only lure I have caught flatties on is 2.5 inch zman grubs with about a 1-6th jighead.

Trolling a pink Micro Mullet in less than 2m of water has always been a great way to find a few while covering some ground. Especially good if the lizards are not responding to plastics.

i wouldn't be too concerned if a particular lure isn't working on a day.  i also wouldn't ever go fishing with just one colour or design as fish are fickle and it pays to try a couple of different things if one isn't working on a particular day.

 

some days, the minnowZ in colour "x" on a 1/4oz jighead kills it, other days a 2.5" grub in colour "y" on a 1/8oz is what they want, colours vary depending on water condition, overhead conditions... not to mention what bait is around at the time.

 

I would suggest having a couple of natural colour lures in differing sizes/designs and a couple of brighter coloured ones in differing sizes/designs, generally 2.5" up to 5" in length.  I would have jig heads from 1/8oz up to 3/8oz, usually in a 1 or 1/0 size hook.

 

I also do well on trolling hard bodies as @marty suggested, these can also be cast around weed beds and drop offs, golden beach is great for this.  crackerjack 55, zerek tango shads, micro mullets... anything from about 40mm up to 100mm that dives to the bottom is worth a go.  colours don't seem to matter too much in my experience, if the water is dirty generally go with something a bit brighter or shinier.

Lures for land based? or Boat?

Landbased can't go wrong wrigglers as Chris mentioned. Good lure to practice on, relatively inexpensive and help you learn to twitch the rod.

The same can be used in a boat, unless you are trolling where you would use some of the hard body lures recommended.
