Whale Rock, Stradbroke Island

Does anyone know the story behind the pvc rod holders that are cemented in around Whale Rock on Stradbroke Island?

I would doubt there is any real story outside of a fisho being proactive there....I did the same at Double Island Point and Cape Moreton in the 80's.

Yeah...just wondering if anyone knows any old timers who fished there. You have to swim there and it is very exposed to swell. I'm not remotely interested in fishing there but am curious how it fishes as the deep water and current presses right against it.

I saw a video some years ago from a guy who used to swim across with his gear in a backpack. Looked pretty scary really and he had to pick the right weather. If I remember correctly he was catching tuna and kingfish. I used to fish the Point regularly when I was a teenager and fearless but never stupid enough to swim to the rock.
