New Addiction PB

Headed out with @Old Scaley today for another go at the Tuskies. I've become addicted to fishing for them, finding myself thinking about them too often to be healthy. haha

A slow start for me, but Steve was on first or second drop. A fine specimen of 47cm was boated. All I managed was a couple of baitings whilst Steve went ahead 3 nil in quick time. Not feeling the love on the 200lb trace, I downsized to 100lb. Still things were quiet for me.

I got off the doughnut with an undersize grassie on the light rod with some cuttlefish. Hmm.

Steve had stopped getting bites as well, so I shifted us to another mark. Good move for me. A 49  followed by a new PB of 50cm christened my new setup that I got specifically to target tuskies. Thanks to @Cobiaaddict for the recommendation. It is a well balanced outfit and well suited to the task, with me feeling I was in control, for the most part anyway.

At one stage we had a double hookup, with Steve landing a 51cm Painted Sweetlips and me another tusky.

Final tally was 9 Blackspot tuskies most in the mid to high 40's, with only one in the high 30's, and a 34cm Grass Tusky. We didn't measure all of them as they don't release that well. We did only keep 2 blueys. I have way too many fish fillets in the freezer after the Cairns trip, as well as previous tusky sessions and snapper sessions. Also, I don't want to ruin the small area that I'm fishing. So it was a lucky day for 7 of them.

Top morning on the water, Brian. Just finished filleting and looking forward to another delicious tusky meal tonight. I think we have those spots nailed now so good to limit the take to a meal or two. 
Always fun to spend time on the water with you mate.

Thanks mate. We'll have to give it another go soon. It's my turn.

Great report.  I reckon you could kill that spot overfishing it so well done on the restraint.  I am like you - lots of fish in the freezer, its chockers with snapper and barra at the moment.

Although everyone bags out the old Slatey Bream/morwong they go bloody hard and are a great fish to catch.  

I have eaten one before (a looong time ago) and it was ok as fresh fillets.  I reckon they could go ok in a curry as well.

I'm interested to hear about the rod and reel @Cobiaaddict recommended for chasing them? I built a custom for Sarah from Outerline and she christened it with a 10kg+ model first trip.

@Andrew_P   Been using a Shimano  Speedmaster 12  and Gary Howard Reef Rumbler 6ft 15-24kg Rods.  Very good combo on fish upto that 8-9 kg range. nice & light weight and can be used for other types of offshore work 

I just had Gary build me a custom Calstar Grafighter I think its a 760M  40-100lb its brilliant on those bigger fish that the GH RR just stops dictating terms during the fight.

unreel combo! ive got 2x 7ft reef rumblers 8-15 in spin and overhead as floatline and mackerel rods. my mate uses his 6ft 8-15 at the reef and stops most species including rather large sharks. just shows how much power the blues have if youre not stopping them with a 15-24kg rod!
