What's your gear worth ?

I've been updating my insurance and had to consider what specified items i should have under the Sports Equipment category.

I just did a rough calculation and came up with at least $15,000 worth. I don't have top end gear either.

Thought I'd throw it out there to see what others have in gear value.

My sums looked like -

Rods $5,300

Reels $4,500

Lures $3,000est

Line and terminal tackle $2,000est

No doubt I have forgotten stuff, too.

I’m not doing it….have to write down the values and that piece of paper could get into the hands of someone who shouldnt know.  Scary when you realise how quick it adds up when there is $5k RRP in just 5 reels.  I did a quick calculation on a small lure tray that has about 20 shallow jerkbaits @$25 each and another with about 15 suspending jerkbaits (@$30 each) and I felt faint

I have photos of most of my gear for insurance purposes so if the unthinkable happens I have evidence of ownership.  Also have the rods and reels and descriptions written down and unless the house burns down have the reel boxes for all of them stacked away.

Yeah, I thought 10k would more than cover it all, until I started to first add up the reels...

Do we have to take into account the possible sale price for each item??   I have half a dozen Rublex Floppy lures from the late 70's in unopened boxes....last check about a decade ago they were about $150 each...Probably about 35 to 40 Leads Lures, Maybe the same amount of timber rapalas, and then we get into the expensive ones....

they are all in tackle boxes waiting to be used lol...or on the shelves waiting for a trip to use them

I do have a bread crate full of yet to be used fishing gear...lots of lures and terminals and stuff.

Lots of blank lures too awaiting paint.

I need examples to use with my wife - who will reply - doesnt mean you are ok!!

I admit my “issue” is a love for finely made mechanical things.  I knew I should not have touched a Calcutta Conquest, but I did and that led to a downward spiral into swiss watch feeling reels.  They dont catch more fish or any such thing but oh that feeling of mechanical precision is something by itself.

I even enjoyed laughing about the marketing spruik of “exciting drag sound” when a barra was peeling off line.  Made no difference to the fish but I had a laugh at the stupidity of the marketing.

what you paid for it vs what you would sell it for vs what people would actually pay for it can be vastly different things

Two nights ago my wife had a discussion...presumably with me, about new years resolutions...it's either that or it was the ads on tv....same result.

So I needed a few new jigheads....

somehow there are 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 jig hooks arriving in my mail in 6 days.....new years resolution shot already.

What can my resolution be now??

I don't have much but what I do have would add up if I had to replace it. 

The boss looks after all that insurance nonsense. Scamming buggers. You've got to keep on them, shifting their figures around all the time. Like dealing with electricity suppliers.

 

All of my fishing gear is above board. No handbrakes on purchasing. She just updates the insurance. 

Waste of money at the moment though...

Same as others here, without counting anything other than rods and reels, I have at least $12K. it's amazing how quickly it adds up. I have enough gear for every type of fishing I would want to do so I would be hard pressed to buy any more, unless I find something that really screams and shouts  at me saying buy me, buy me!!

I tried mansplaning it to her and she just rolled her eyes and said, you never go fishing at the moment, so what's the point.

Tackleshops are like woolworths to me...go go in, grab exactly what i want and out in under 2 minutes.

Online though I can peruse for hours.......it is so much easier.

So I went to BCF today to return my new recalled life jackets....the only inflatables that were legal on the shelf were $209 each....no thanks....apparently nearly all of the inflatables for sale in Australia are from the one manufacturer and mostly used the same part....i got the refund thank you. I didn't even browse for anything else.

Then I went to Tackleworld Lawnton and ordered a replacement landing net mesh....from the counter I looked at the shop with a glance and walked out....job done, back home drinking my manshake.

Now I am scrolling through AliExpress....my bet is there will be a purchase shortly...

I am like Brian, shouldnt spend unsupervised time in a tackleshop.  There is always something interesting to try….however walked through BCF at Tingalpa ratted through the clearance bin, didnt see anything I liked and walked out empty handed.   First time in living memory

BCF Tingalpa yeah nah, now if it was BCF Everton Park well they have about 10 clearance bins to pick through so I would be there a fair while and guarantee I would find a $10 special lure I couldnt live withouth

I have lost interest in BCF on the Central Coast, to pricey. There is a new mob. Been around for about a year. Hot Tackle. Prices are reasonable. But I still shop around. Fishing online4 has good prices.

About only thing I buy at BCF will be in their bargain bins.  They put in a lot of stuff at full price but then there is the odd thing that is actually a bargain.  

I did buy my replacement Engel from BCF on sale though - Speaking of which should I ***** and moan about the fact my old Engel only last 24 years - only ever flogged over a few thousand sand dunes and corrugations.

There is a 12ft spin rod I was looking at, BCF on Special $157.00. Anglers have the same one $119.00. Say no more.

How is MoTackle these days??  

You need to order a lot online these days to make the most of the shipping charges in the past year I have found.

Hooked Online a pretty decently priced, range is decent.

I just got delivery of some jig hooks from AliExpress, I think I will be ordering more of them in the future.

Mo tackle is average. Depends on what you are looking for. I just shop around for the best price. If BCF, has it, I ask them to match. It is just convenient because BCF is just ten minutes away.

I Can't believe the retail prices of some reels. I bought a Penn slammer 4500 hs just over a year ago brand new for $240. Retail now $420. I bought a Saragossa 6000 for $282. Retail now $430.

Anaconda has great specials from time to time. I bought a Penn Conflict 6000 reel for $99 with a shirt thrown in with the deal. The reels were $220 retail at the time.

Everything has gone through the roof price wise.  Government loves it because there GST revenue goes up in line with it.

I only buy my reels through Digitaka.  Free shipping and I alway add in either some braid or trebles etc until the shipping charge is added, then reduce my order back until its free again  Usually takes about 3 or 4 days to arrive from Japan, shipped DHL.  

Bought a new Shimano Stradic SW as a gift for a mates birthday before Xmas…$100 less than in Aus which I then used to restock my Owner trebles - which are less than half the price of buying in Australia.

I think I would get to about $7-$8k. None of my gear is high end, just the best I can afford. Rods I think I have one that would be about $300 replacement, the rest are sub $150. Then there’s the mighty $17 Temu reel I have not yet managed to kill, 15 months and going strong, has put many fish on the table too.

Benno, I am finding some fantastic quality and service from some cheap reels.

I have always been a Stradic, Baitrunner, TLD, Ambassadeur guy with plenty of others along the way.....Ryobi gave me great service in the 80's....Van Staahl was probably the most uppercrust I owned.

Now after 50 odd years on the water and lots of dabbles in different angling forms, I have watched prices become absolutely ridiculous.....un-needed upgrades every year or two for workhorse reels etc.

A bit over a year ago I gave a AliExpress reel a shot....I did not expect it to last....it is still going strong regardless of the absolute punishment I have given it through the year. I doubt my old ABUs would have survived what I did to this reel.

I scoff at the "need" for a stella for bream or snapper....that is just pure w a n k...

I tend to agree re people buying $1000+ reels for trying to catch bream and the like - it just flat out confuses me. But I guess a lot of things do that. I guess if you’ve got the $ go for it but I don’t think you’ll catch more than someone beside you with a reasonable $100 reel.

 

I have got some other stuff off internet.com sites, picked up 500m of 10lb braid for about $9, works an absolute treat! 
 

that being said, I did get spoiled recently and someone purchased a new mid-range Diawa reel for me as a gift… it is rather nice to use.

I have had various reels over the years. The Fin-Nors have been the best. Bought them years ago & they still keep going. Bit heavy on today's reels, but who cares as long as they work. Allan Hawk gave them a big rap. They don't make them anymore, but there are still some for sale.

Its funny a mate of mine is happy to spend money on a better quality reel but wont spend it on a nice rod.  He isnt buying Stella’s but wont spend money on a half decent carbon rod and uses old Ugly sticks and the like.  Cannot work out why he cant feel anything with a soft plastic
