North Strabroke Over Christmas

G'day AFO Members.

Well unfortuantly for my well anticipated trip to North Stradbroke Island, a low low weather system occured. Long story short i got to do no where near the ammount, or quality of fishing i wished to do. The biggest upset was not being able to get offshore in the new Kayak. But being a teenie bit obsessed, i still found time to wet a line at least once a day with my dad and wife.

Its funny actually because the first day and half i was there were sweet. The first day was the only day we could get down to the rocks at point lookout so down we went. It was a frustrating time for both of us! WE watched tailor bust up on the surface time and time again. However, slugs, plastics, spinner baits, hardbodies and as a last resort pillies could not temp a bite! At least we got to watch the Manta Rays which entertained us with many underwater manouvers. On the rocks that day we also saw sea turtles, stinrays, shovel nose rays and 2 large sharks (some sort of whalers). So it was far from a boring trip.

The day Dad and I headed to Dunwich (the only sheltered location on the Island) to hit up the pilons with soft plastics. This was a fun session. While nothing large was caught, we got plenty of moses perch, squire and parrot which kept us very entertained. This was quite literally the moment the low came in and the southerly started as well. About 2 hours into this session we got smashed by the new weather system and put our tails between our legs and headed home.

Most of the rest of the trips fishing was spent on either Home Beach or the northern facing beach at Amity. A very cool gutter/lagoon had formed on home beach whcih at low tide was completely cut off from the ocean. In this lagoon, Tanya, my Dad and I caught whiting, bream, dart and flathead (all bartails which was interesting) for as long as we could be bothered. There was truly a staggering number of small fish in this lagoon with only the occasional whiting and 2 flathead being dinner worthy.

The north facing beaches of Amity also proved successful (for some). I actually managed a whopping 0 fish here. But Tanya caught 3 bream all around the 30cm mark. P.S. She loves her new Freams Kix!

Johnny (Webmaster) also cam over for a few days as well. As plastics really shut down we fished mostly with worms. Once again plenty of dart and whiting. But nothing big.

Anyway all in all fun was had. I would always prefer to catch small fish than no fish. However I eagerly await some better weather so i can once again hit up the presently inaccessible spots i love at Stradbroke.

Cheers.

Angus

"Not the best shot, but you get the idea how close we were the Manta Rays. Pretty cool".

"A typical Moses. These were all around 25cm. Technically legal which is pretty silly. Good thing is they fight very hard for their size".

Great that you got out. I was down at my parent's and struggled to wet a line in the floods. I love the look of that bream caught in nice clean waters. So silvery. That rocky spot looks so fishy. I'll have to get over there. Are all those spots easy to get to with a normal car?
