Lots of fish but can you eat them?

Would appreciate some comments from experienced fishos on the edibility/toxicity or otherwise of fish from Brisbane R and tributaries. Any areas to avoid eating fish from? species to avoid? or any other pointers. After browsing the forums it is obvious that I have been overlooking my backyard, but prefer to be able to eat what I catch (assuming legal size of course, which seems to be the biggest problem for me these days!). The bullies certainly look attractive, being an x Victorian I like a good feed of flake.

You could eat every fish from the river. Even Catfish:sick:. But if you are going to eat fish in fairly large amounts, I'd stick to fish that would head in and out of the river pretty constantly. Like Snapper, Sharks and other seasonal fish. Fish that stay in the river all their lives like Bream and Catfish could accumulate bad stuff. I'm no scientist (yet:lol:), but I reckon those'd be safe.

Oxely Ck might be a place to avoid for a lot of fish. But I've had Prawns from there and I'm still alright. But Prawns go in and out of the river alot.

I've had Flathead from the river and it was just as good as cleaner places like Jumpinpin and Bribie.

Cowfish, the bream dont stay in the river, one was tagged at collegs crossings, and something like 6 weeks later was recaptured at tangalooma island. (spelling)

MarkF, The sharks in the river under 1m are fine to eat, the larger ones have abit of murcury, but most you catch are from 70cm - 1m anyway and i can tell you they are Very good to eat, and easy enought to catch + they have alot of meat. :).

I dont eat any fish but the brisbane river cant be too bad. i was watching a program on the imported fish into australia and the waters that they are caught and some of the overseas rivers were horribly polluted with raw sewerage and other contaminants. I have seen guys catching muddies on a weekly basis directly by the outlet of treatment plants and they are still ok (physically anyway).

That's garbage. For example I have seen the facilities of the Thai prawn farms, they are WORLDS AHEAD of what we have here. China etc are similar.

Basa is one example of a fish that isn't farmed under such stringent conditions; they are from Vietnam. Nevertheless they still are subject to Australian standards for food safety.

Do a little research and get some education before making broad sweeping (and incorrect) generalisations.

It's just my own opinion but i don't trust any of brisbane's water ways. I don't eat anything I catch in Brisbane but plenty of people do and seem ok... For now...

Then again Kev eats Schultz bream and a snake bit him and died lol:laugh:

That's hilarious:laugh: :silly:

lot of poeple have eaten alot of fish from all areas of the river and are fine.

The river itself is in great shape, now that commercial development has stopped and enviromental laws have come into place.

That said, i wouldnt eat anything caught from the poo shoot. I know the fish caught there would be fine, and i know fish that eat there would move up and down the river, but the poo shoot :X

YUK!!!

Once again, just my opinion and not based on any facts but wouldn't a lot of the bream in the river be 30 odd years old and be old enough to be full of junk from when the Brissie River was badly polluted?

I'm sure there's some info going around saying a 40cm is something like 30 years old.

Personally if I'm not 100% confident what I'm eating is clean I just can't eat it. I'm sure there's plenty of food I eat from the supermarket/takeaways that isn't that great in quality, but ignorance is bliss. ;)
