Bit od advice

Hi All

I am a "born again" fisherman. Could anybody give me some tips on good places to fish in the Brisbane River or out in the bay? I am not asking for your "secret" spots, just some guidelines. Places I have fished at include Manly Park, Comslie and Jacobs Well(only one time). I have caught a few nice bream and whiting at Manly (near the boat harbour) but mostly don't get a serious bite. Comslie Park is a nice place, but the fish are usually in nappies.

My fishing experience is good in terms of tackle, tying gear and baiting a hook. While I never used soft plastics in my earlier days, they seem a strong chance.

I appreciate that there is more water between fish these days, however, the sport is still very alluring

Anyone with a tip or two would be most appreciated

Cheers and thanks in advance

Mate firstly welcome to the site.

Secondly have a good look through the forum report under "All Brisbane Rivers And Creeks". There is an absolute wealth of knowledge in teh form of locations and methods in there. Shultz Canal may also be worth a look.

Also click the link in my footer to check out the various upcoming AFO events. Fishing with people in the know is often to best way to learn.

Cheers.

Well, for Whiting, We've caught heaps of Winter Whiting at Mud Island and St Helena. We've also got big Bream at Peel Island. And St Helena has usually got alot of Mackerel around this time of year.

Also on these reef fringed islands, you've got a good chance of Snapper, Tusk fish and Sweetlip. Mud Island is probably better for those fish though.

For the Brisbane river, the mouth of Boggy Ck has a good population of Flathead, Sharks and Threadfin Salmon.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies. I live at Jindalee, about 400m from the river. My assupmtion was that the only thing anyone caught there was catfish. Some of you guys are now talking about Mt Crosby....wow

Maybe I should not even go out anywhere...grin

Thank you for your helpful advice

Harry :)

From Moggill to Jindalee we still get respectable captures of Threadfin Salmon, Bream, Sharks, Flathead and a few other randoms.

And mate dont wsorry about age. You are not our oldest member :)

We have had a few Karana Downs outings.

On that note, maybe another one is in order to welcome new members. The sharks have been going balistic and im sure kooka must be teeming with them now!

I know several members of this site that rate them highly over many fish. There is a thread somewhere that Ray posted on how to clean them. The flesh looks fantastic i must say. Very informative read as well. If someone can dig up that link most appreciated.

Hey mate, i live in westlake, not far from jindalee, there are some good fish even just down at the jindalee boat ramp. I have caught bream, and sharks there, along with catfish eels ect. But also not far from thaat spot i have caught Threadfin Salmon, bream and flathead. There are heaps of prawns in the river at certan times of the year, they should be coming now or soon, they would be safe to eat as they dont live in the river for very long and the river is alot cleaner than it was years ago. So if you have a cast net, no need to buy bait. If your down at the boat ramp, try anything like mullet, pillys, anything, live is best, use a wire trace and theres a good chance you will catch a shark, the ones under 1m are great chewing. Try live prawns and you have a chance of a thready, and the usuall bream bait can pick you up a bream or 3, with the odd flatty if your lucky..

kookaburra park loverly spot

dont be afraid to throw a lure into the most ridiculous spots some places ive seen fish come out of recently are just mind blowing the smallest of drains rivers etc can hold astonishing fish so if its wet and close flick a lure around and see what turns up not that id eat them out of the drains thats what the bay is for if you want a feed try the islands they all produce good fish on the right day good luck and ill catch you on the water :)

I live at Jindalee too, and on my nights off I wet a line at the boat ramp there or Fig Tree Pocket and very rarely go home without a feed. Bream, shark and Salmon are the usual. My ratio of catfish to bream is about 2:1, but the first catty always goes back out on the end of a wire trace while I keep targeting bream with the other rod.

Hi Angus

Mate, enough of this old...grin. And apologies for the flash looking photo. Only recent one I had. Being single again (paroled after a long marriage term), recent photos are not big at my place. Tried to take one of myself, but all I got was a huge nose....

Hey, the girl in your phote doesn't have an old sister, does she?

Haha. Thats my wife :P And she has a younger sister but we wont go there.

Kookaburra Park = Kooka. Awesome spot upriver of you around Karana Downs. It fishes very very well from time time for bream, flatties, sharks and salmon. Its also a nice spot. But go upriver of teh ramp away from the ski lice. People tend not to becuase its narrower than downstream, but all the same fish are there.

Hi Pinkie

Thanks for your two bobs worth. "Reely" helpful. Nice to hear from a local. How do you reckon a prawnstar lure would go down at Jindalee boat ramp or surrounds? I have had some good results in the bay with these little fellas

Harry

Hahah funny you say that ! jason has an awsome story about using a prawnstar at the boatramp at night, and getting ownd by a monster salmon. Ill let him tell the sory.

yeah i was showing a mate how to use lures because he had never used them before and he had just bought 1 of those big prawns stars in the yellow colour and i was jigging it up around the pilons and just as the prawn star came to the surface a massive metre + thready smashed the Sh#t out of it and in doing so it jumped fully out of the water and half beached itsself on the jetty but then fell back in and ran and snaped the 30 pound braid, it sucked but it was amazing to see it go crazy over a lure lol

Ok..you are talking to a mug fisherman. Having said that, I use a "natural" colour Prawnstar Junior. No, I do not get snagged often because of the environment I fish in (I have lost a couple of lures and at $12.95, not a happy event. They have one suicide and two trebles so are a bit "sticky"). Your line is passed through the first two hooks and then tied to the last treble in the tail. Everytime you flick the rod, the tail flicks forward, giving the action of a "startled" prawn.

Basically, (using a braid line) I cast, watch for any action on the lure, if not, allow the line to tighten a bit (as the lure sinks) and then take up the slack, then flick the rod a couple of times, take up the slack etc. Mostly you get a hit on the "slack" cycle so it is good to watch the line.

I have caught bream, flatties and, would you believe, whiting on this lure. Give it a go. If a fish grabs it, they are usually caught!

Well I've got some Prawnstars. I managed to pick 5 of them up for $10 from Amart at Underwood (as did about 10 other members from AFO, word of a good special spread quickly). So that'll be another lure I've gotta try out in the bay.

Thanks

Don't you know we all hate people getting thing cheaper!... Normally this lure is around $12.95 ea! Have a little dig on the internet to see how these little guys were developed. Aussie product, mate!

Cheers

Prawnstars - I got a swag of em last time Amart down there had them 5 for $10. I recokon they were overpriced at $2 each! Never caught anything on them, annoying as hell to rig, blowed if I can get any action on them even when I get them rigged - to stiff.

These days they just sit in the lure box getting ignored. Half the hooks and weights have fallen out anyway, and gone missing.

Hey, a man that sees value in these critters.

Prawnstars are not worth two bob unless you understand the action of them. While I do not pretend to be an experienced fisherman, it appears that Prawnstars depend on the "pulse" of the tug of the rod to simulate a prawn making a startled action. It appears that this is a turn on to many fish (a girl wiggling her backside also has this effect on boys...grin). While I have often catch Pike with this lure, (and that is not so bad, whack it on another rod), mostly other species cannot resist the signature they provide.

i'm with you feral, rigging them frustrates the crack off me. i went thru a prawnstar junior phase a while ago, the only place i ever caught fish with them tho was on the wrecks in the pine river, cod, bream and 2 jacks. i have bought 5 or 6 but now have none due to there annoyingness.

Rigging is a PITA, but is easy with (in my case, a pair of strong glasses) or a bit of perserverance. Through the front hook, through the centre treble and then tie to the tail treble. Makes it easy if you cut about a metre of line and then clamp a clothes peg on the loose end.

I use a double bloodnot or a UNI for the critical tie to the back treble. Tying to the back treble makes the lure flick its tail when you take up slack or jerk. For the front end you can tie either a swivel or a ring. I keep a couple in my tackle box set up this way. On my rod I just terminate with a clip swivel. The line I use for this operation is Berkley Flourocarbon (6lb) leader on a 6lb Berkley Fireline. Rig just casts like a dream. Occasionally, i get whacked big time, and lose my lure. Oh well, maybe a stonger line...

You seem to have had some fun with your prawnstar...

Mate, I am not trying to tell you what to do, just keeping a positive note.

Someone suggested a better alternative. He called it the "Long tail jumping prawn". For this you need a quarter stick of gelignite and about 6 inches of blue sump fuse. The fish rise everytime for this bait.

Cheers, buddy

Simply nice to be a fisherman

May your crack rest in piece

Harry
