Fishing at Bribie

Hey Guys

Loving the site!! just found it the other day when i was searching for places to fish in Brisbane! I've just gotten back into fishing after years of absence and its great!

i forgot how much i loved it!

Me and a few mates are thinking of cruising up to Bribie Is for a fish this weekend, but don't have access to a boat. Can anyone recommend any half decent land based spots up there?? and what have people been catching?

im tossing up between going up there, or going to nudgee creek/schultz canal ( only found out about that place on here. I never knew the canal was a good palce to fish!! ) instead.

What do you guys recommend? How has the fishing up at bribie been lately?

I haven't seen many Bribie land based reports on here really. I had a drive around there one day and I reckon your best bet there would be trying a few plastics on the surf side on a calm day. Look for a gutter. I think the Eastern side of the Island gets a real flogging. I saw at least 30 people fishing off that main pontoon. Didn't see anyone catch a single fish.

I reckon there'd be some spots there worth fishing though just you'd probably need a 4x4 to get to them. Could be wrong though.

Some of the guys have had great success at at Bribie. I wont go into to much detail as im strictly using heresay and info from reports here.

But Jimmybob and Dazza have caught good fish in the locks and canals at Bribie. Jimmy even got a massive 50 odd cm Spangled Emperor. Most passge facing beaches you are in with a good chance at flathead and whiting etc.

Off the bongaree jetty bream are prolific. Tim A from the site has also caught mackeral there live baiting.

On the surf side i have caught many whiting. You dont need heavy gear, just some good soft plastics or beach worms (local tackle store or even servo should be bale to help you there).

Id just rock along and try a few places until something works!

G'day Angus, is the locks the "lock gates" if so what and where are they? all I know is that there in the bongaree canals?

Cheers, Mick.

If you fish the Bongaree jetty smartly, you can do quite well, dont just do the old, buy a packet of frozen prawns, use a huge sinker with heavy line and hurl it out as far as you can, go light, fresh bait, and little weight :).

Some words of wisdom there. Try with some sp's or fresh bait around the vmr for some lizards. Walk the banks!

My ex-stomping ground comes up again!

Bribie is a weird place for fishing, best time for the fishing is between now and April, The pelagics should hopefully show up in the passage this year as there wasnt much action last year, If so, just one cast of the net on the left hand side of the jetty past the shelter and you'll get enough herring for the day, chuck a bait jig or even better some 3" berkley power minnows(any sp will work, this just what I use because I fish for flatties there aswell)for stacks of pike during the dark or even better at dawn. They, along with grinner fillets are my two favourite baits for hoiking out at vermin with big snapper leads.

For bream, fish the incoming tide with a simple rig of a small sinker, ball or barrel are good, a swivel then about 50cm of light leader around 6 lb to a small suicide hooks. My favourite spot for breaming is to walk down the stairs to the old platform and instead of casting under the jetty( Way too many pickers!) cast it about 2 m out right next to the new pontoon that they built for the boats. Prawns are my favourite bait but all the others do work. Be careful fishing the jetty at night because there are some absolute $$$$heads there that will start you or nick your gear.

Like it has been said before theres lots of small tackers around the jetty with a few decent fish throwin in that will keep u busy.

What I like to do when fishing the jetty is to use my 10ft rock fishing rod and spinning reel. Standing at the end of the main part of the jetty using a patornosta rig with squid and grinner fillets as bait and lots of lead. Cast out hard aiming at the glass house mountains about a 1/3 of the way across the passage this will put u right on top of sum rubble which is loaded with reef fish.

Also try throwing around sum metal as there is always a mackeral or two to be had at this time of the year..;)

I have also heard that the loch has been fishing well for mangrove jacks using live baits...

Watch out of a night time for the jetty dropkicks!!

a place to try on the way to bribie.. just before you get to the 60 zone at ningi on bribie road, there is a track on the left.. it can be a bit hard to see.. this gives you access to ningi creek guest before the old leases.. drive down the track and at the end it splits right goes to a dirt boat ramp and left takes you to a point where a small creek meets ningi creek..

This area is good for flatie, bream and cod and the odd jack..

Hope this helps

Noel
