Japan-icefishing

Konichiwa,

As many of you already know i am visiting Japan for three weeks. On January 20 I will hear if a particular lake is frozen so I can go ice fishing and frozen lake go karting.

I will add a report and some pics to this thread.

This Sunday I am going snowboarding and next Tuesday I am going to see Sumo Wrestling.

I have already done the tourist thing through the temples of Kyoto (incl, sitting a Buddhist ceremony with one singing priest and another priest beating a big huge drum) and been shopping at Tokyo and Karaoke at Omiya.

I also have plans to party one night at Tokyo.

You should see the bullet trains. They look like airplanes. They are unreal. In fact everything here is pretty unreal.

The other night i experienced my first snowfall which was quite a treat. I also got chosen to participate on stage for a play act at this little village called `Edo Wonderland`. It is a village full of actors that imitate ancient Japan. I was a little nervous because there was about 50 Japanes people watching and laughing at me and I didn`t have a clue what the actors were saying. Nevertheless it was alot of fun.

I also went and saw the famous Monkey show and have eaten many strange things. My favourite being dried marinated squid.

Anyway guys, here are some pics. I`ll keep you all posted.

We will be skiing in Echigo somwhere I think.

Feral - I`m wearing thermal tops and bottoms, long sleeve shirt, microfibre base layer, a jacket, gloves and beeny and It`s still bloody cold. The local girls walk around in the shortest little skirts. Just looking at them makes you hyperthermic

How's your Japanese language skills? I did 3 years of it in high school, and from that all I remember is how to count to 10 and how to introduce myself.

Watasheno nameawa Rocket san!

Do you find it hard to communicate when you are out and about?

Sounds like you are having a ball, try not to look at too many short skirted locals, you may not want to come home!

Very good mate.

Communicating is quite easy because my girlfriend is Japanese.

We are staying with her Mother, Father and Brother which breaks the costs down quite a bit.

My language skills are getting better.

I know the basics and i learn more and more each day.

As for the short skirted locals, well.... the Mrs has given me permission to take a photo of one to post here for you all to see B)

What`dya reckon boys ;)

you should go to the tackle shops and buy up heaps!

I`ve already thought of that.

Unfortunately i`m staying in Kawagoe, Saitama which is nowhere near the coast so there is no fishing scene here at all. The closest thing I could find to even a fishing magazine was a squiding magazine. It comes with a free dvd so i might go back and get it.

I did buy a cartoon porno from a cartoon porno shop though.

I thought it makes a good novelty. lol

Tomorrow i am going to Yokohama which is known for it`s port so I`ll keep an eye out for a tackle shop there.

You never know.

To keep you all drooling, here are some bargains i have come across. Before i left, i bought a Canon 400D twin lens camera for $1100.

I could have bought one here for under $800.

I bought a 700m bottle of Johnny red and a 700m bottle of Jack Daniels today for $30. That`s $30 for both of them and from the corner newsagency. Alcohol is cheaper here from the vending machines in the street than from Dan Murphys in Oz.

Before I left Oz i bought the top of the range Braun shaver 360 complete for $460. I could have bought it here for $250.

The 60Gb video camera i paid over $800 for before leaving to Japan isn`t even on the market here anymore as i tried to buy a second battery for it the other day. I`m really spewing about that one as for the same $ i could have gotten the latest ridgy didg camcorder.

Hopefully i can come across a bargain on a new reel.

hell yeh! sounds awesome.. i'll be there in april, so i'm gonna miss all the snow and potential ice fishing but cheers for the advice on the cheap booze!

April hey! Awesome!

I`m thinking of coming back some time next year on a working visa.

You don`t have to be able to speak Japanese at all to teach English full time.

I hung out with an Aussie today who has been here 5 years doing just that and he still can`t speak much Japanese.

He reckons full time is about 34 hours a week and take home over $500 a week after tax.

How come you are coming in April? Holiday?

Prepare for many hangovers.

I saw 700ml bottles of Johnny red topday in another corner store for only A$13.

Are you single?

There`s seriously like no fat chicks here man. lol

Thanks Ian.

Sorry guys, i decided to not go ice fishing.

The closest lake HAS frozen over but will not confirm fishability till the day i fly out and the other is 3 hours travel each way and that involves changing trains a number of times.

It`s just too much hassel unfortunately.

I did visit a tackle shop just then though.

WOW!!!

I still have a big woody.

Awesome prices and new model reels that i`ve never even heard of in both Shimano and Daiwa.

What really took my breath away was the rod selection.

Bloody unreal and as for those rods you see people using that have no reel on them, they are beautifully carved pieces of art.

Not just a stick as i initially thought they were.

Anyway guys.

Gotta get some rest.

I have to get up around midnight to head for the hills to do some snowboarding.

Cathya soon! [img size=314]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/__30011___20687__003.jpg

been wanting to go for the last 8 years bro, had Japanese exchange students growing up as a kid for as long as I can remember and they were always really cool people. So I've got a few places to mooch at when I go. Also worked at lone pine koala sanctuary for awhile, so got to hang out with hundreds of Japanese people daily.. love the culture, love the women and I want a traditional Japanese tattoo.

Got a pocket full of cash, but I'm still gonna get the working holiday visa so I can try and stay as long as possible and pick up some work either as an Assisted Learning Teacher or something like that.

I'll be going by myself so if you're still over there or going back dude send us a message through the site and we might be able to catch up. I really wanna go goby fishing but dunno if it'll be the right time of year.

Anyway, rock out ya lucky bastard!
