Brisbane River Tarpon

Went for a fish down at my G-Spot early this morning armed with my light flick stick. Didn't really know what would be around so put on a mid sized 70mm Rapala Skitter Pop. Was really slow to begin with, took about 2 hours before the first good wack but persistence paid off. Was fairly confident they were mostly Tarpon as they were jumping out all over the place for it. Ended up with 2, 1 around 30cm the other at about 45cm. Also got a 25cm Mullet that drilled the popper at my feet.

Never caught or even seen one in the flesh. What do they go like ? What would you compare them too ?

The little one went harder then the big one because of where I hooked him. Like most fish if they are gut or gill hooked they'll pull, but no where near as hard as a lip or face hooked fish. That's generally because there are no pain sensors in their jaw.

After you get over the blast of the surface take you've got a few jumps to look out for which is the best part about their fight. The bigger one jumped 7 times and the little one 3 times.

If you do target them I'd suggest not using a stiff rod because they have no weight behind them, after all they are in the Herring family. When they pause after a run you tend to reel them in pretty easily with a stiff rod as you try to keep tension. 2lb FC straight through with an 8lb tippet on my Finesse Custom reel and 1-3kg IMX will be what I'll be using next time so they are definitely an ultra light sports fish. I can see why people love them on fly.

Not sure what to compare them to. Their shake on the jump are definitely faster and more violent then a Barra. Maybe a jumping Chopper Tailor is the closest thing to them. One thing for sure is I want more.

They would be sooo fun, what fought better, the 30cm tarpon or the 25cm mullet? Thats awsome!

The 30cm Tarpon went harder then the Mullet. I just reeled the Mullet in. I was expecting it to start running and leaping all over the place but it didn't.

No need for that. I think you will find that is a joke directly related to your reaction in another thread.

if you want to save time blacking out all your photos just take a bin liner and put the fish on that

Or just stick it on your brag mat!

I think the proper name for the J-fish is something like "Spotted Grunter-bream". I know that sounds dodgey but its close! I would have to look up Grant's to be sure.
