Moreton Bay Fishing at the Weekend

Me, mack attack and cowfish went out in the boat last weekend and fished around the Peel Island Amity Point region. For the first couple of hours that we fished, we really had no luck with not even a single strike (mainly the result of the current being just too strong even for a really big snapper sinker :( ). After the zero success, we headed off to amity point and fished in deep water just off the rocks. At first we were only catching little bream and other fish, however, after myself and mack attack decided to put out half a big grinner each on a heavy outfit, we managed to hook 3x 12-15 kg wobbegong sharks (Fun to catch :cheer: ). After catching the sharks, we then headed off the fish around Peel Island, hoping to catch some pike or grinner on soft plastics (for bait) as well as some big snapper. The first spot that we tried really only yielded some small moses pearch, tusk fish and bream. However as we made our way around the Island, we decided to try a spot that we had previously had some success at (the spot where i had hooked up to a very big snapper, only to have my really explode during the course of the fight). We had chucked out some ganged pilchards and after 1 hour or so had caught a 46cm snapper, 25cm bream and many 20-30cm squire, aswell as another 12-15kg wobbegong and managed to hook up to a massive sea turtle (probably weighing close to 100kg+ ). Pictured below are some of the fish.

Hmmm... Something happened to the pics:huh: Oh well.

All the Wobbies were 120-126cm long (biggest we've ever caught:blink:), but typical of a Wobbigong, they were just a dead weight in the current.

The baits we caught them on were just the head half of a Grinner. One of the baits was about 25cm long, and that accounted for the 2 bigger ones.

The Snapper that Mozza got was the only really good fish we caught all day. Nothing on plastics either. All they wanted was ganged pillies.

I tried 4" Powerbaits minnows in the clear colour and in pumkinseed. Got mauled by Toadies:angry:

I tried 3" minnows in pink lemonade (very bright pink sparkley colour, a bit gay tho:dry::lol:). This got hits from Moses Perch when they were under our boat and a lot of hits from what I can only assume was Pike. Small tentative bites at the rear of the plastic, no hook-ups and small incisions on the plastic.

I tried 3" Mango Ripple Gulps in Minnow Grub, same as above for Pike.

I also tried a R2S bubble pop 45 to try and get some Trevally and maybe some Pike but nothing:(

And I also tried a small 50mm lure that swims alright, but isn't too expensive for no hits.

Was very disappointed as I was trying out a new rod and I wanted to get a good sized Snapper or Cod. The rods awesome though:cheer:

What side of Peel ? What depth ?

I'm not too sure on that:blink: I guess it might be the north western side but I'm not too great on directions on the water:blink: :silly:. It's basically the black warning beacon that you see first when you go to Peel from the Cleveland Boat ramp.

As for depth, we fished on the drop-off where it goes from 2m to 8m very quickly. We anchored at the 6m mark.

The Wobbies were at least heavy and hardish to pull up I guess, but we were going for proper Sharks (off Amity, go figure:silly:) so we were using a size 30 Tyrnos and a probably size 20 or so Okuma real. Both with 40lb or 35lb mono on them. So no drag was pulled, but they were at least heavy.

His reel really did explode, but it wasn't during the course of the fight, it exploded on the strike:laugh: :P. Then the line continued to peal off the reel, until the Snapper eventually found its home.
