Gold Coast Canals 27 January 2008

Well Stu and I hit the canals this morning with high hopes.

Passed up an open bar opportunity the night before, so although a little tired at the 3:00am start, at least i was fresh faced :P

First tactics we used was poppers and more poppers.

I was so dissapointed not hook anything using this method as i had frequent follows and huge swirls. There were fish literally busting up all arounf us. Stu was a bit luckier landing a good sized tailor that gave his gear a good work out.

Soon after i switched to Plastics and my luck changed. Although i landed nothing "amazing" for the morning, i did land enough moses perch and cod to keep me entertained. I can happily say i think my plastics drought is over. I think all up i got 4 moses on plastics and a cod, and one on a Strike King hard body.

Stu as usual did very well on the plastics. First off he boated (to both of our surprise) a 30 odd cm squire. After a few moses perch he had a screaming run. He called it for a cod and I called it for a Jack. Both of us should have known better as instead of running him into a snag, this fish headed for open water. After a long fight on 4lb braid and 6lb leader a Golden Trev emerged as the culprit. It was a good looking fish and a happy angler.

All fish for the day were released.

Stu thanks for showing me the spot mate.

Look forward to having a fish with you again.

If you plan on launching your boat on Australia Day long weekends, think twice. We had no worries getting out as it was still dark. But coming in the line up was crazy. There were cars with trailers parked KM's from the ramp.

I hope everyone else had a good fish this weekend.

Yeah the boat ramp was the most packed I had seen anywhere:angry: with no real order just had to push in to get the boat back in or we would still be siting there:woohoo: Was a good morning the wind picked up which made it a bit uncomfortable but was still great taking Angus and showing the surface action in the early morning

Nah Elli was up the canal a bit it was a surprise to me

One thing i forgot to mention in the report was the awesome fighting style of this tailor. It lept out of the water several times and in the pre light was actually called as a herring or tarpon on the first leep. Certainly stript some drag.

The service action was prolific but you could almost always see trvally tails sticking out everywhere so its hard to say if there would have been heaps more tailor. But there is a LOT of bait there so why not...

Nice trip guys, seems like there's a few Goldens around.

You'd be surprised how far upstream you can catch Taylor. I've caught legal Taylor on Sx40s in my Jack spot a good few K up the Brunswick river. None quite that big though, they go hard even at 30cm so that one would have been good fun.

Not that long. There was NO traffic in teh morning. People must have been nursing their Australia Day hangovers :P But coming back was busy as. We stopped several times and chucked plastics and sand banks and channel drop offs hoping for a flatty, but there were that many jet ski's and hoon boaters out it wasnt to enjoyable.

Kev and I got a tip off about a secret Queenie spot near Jacob's Well a while back and tried Land Based but got nothing and it was pooring rain so not surprising.

We could only find one spot to fish there landbased without trespassing though.:(

It'd be great to get onto some surface action around there.
