Peel Island

I have a similar sized boat to you. Personally I wont go to Peel if it's 15. Too uncomfortable. It can chop up very quickly there too. I normally head up there from Viccy Point. Take it easy around the bottom of Coochie if you go that way. There's a deep whole where the red buoy is off the southeast corner. It's a popular spot so somebody must catch something there. I avoid it as it's usually crowded.

Heading up towards Peel from there you will come across the Banana banks. So you are a good chance of sand species (Flattie, whiting etc) Burleying up there might see you a chance of a shark this time of year too.

As you approach Peel there a re a couple of depth changes - 12m to 6m and then 6m to 3m. Try fishing these areas for squire and cod.

Off the Southwest corner in about 3m of water there is a popular spot too. You'll know it by the number of other boats in the area.

Keep your eyes on your sounder for the rocky bottom and you'll probably jag some of the common reefies - grassy sweetlip, squire, parrot etc. Have even pulled in a Chinaman fish there - DON"T eat them - familiarise yourself with them before you go so you don't;)

Having a floating Pillie out while your bottom bashing is alweays a good idea around that area - you never know when the macks are going to turn up.

Of course - enjoy Peel while you can - the EPA wants it off limits:(

Fish Peel most weekends, dont bother if the wind is from the North. I leave from Clev ramp, 4 lanes and takes about 10 minutes.

Peel is hit and miss, slowly I am working the place out. Big tip is find the bait and the Snaps will be close. A quality sounder is a good head start.

If fishing plastics, 4 and 5" in green natural Colours. 5" Camo Gulp is a fav of mine. Lightish leader. I fish 12lbs with a 15lbs main. There are some fish there you will never stop.

Dont forget some gear for the speedsters, they can pop up from time to time.

Also get in early, its a popular place and Snapper spook easily. If drifting work your drift out first, motor noise put them off.

Well if you happen to jag some whiting they make good livies. Also some guys reckon baby octopus go well, but to be honest I've had better results on the trusty old squid.

PS if Seabreeze has it right at this early stage of the week, then I wouldn't be heading there this weekend. Depending on how far north of Peel you go you could find yourself out of "Smooth Water" and into "Partially Smooth Water", so make sure you have the extra safety equipment required or you may find yourself with a fine or worse.

Cheers:)

Ellicat - the EPA isn't proposing to zone off all of peel at all. the only real proposed change is a slight extension to the total exlusion zone on the north-west side and a one hook per line per person limit inside the 4m contour around the island. around the area, myora is being totally excluded which is fine by me, bird and goat islands also get the one hook per line per person limit. the peel island area (incl goat, bird and particularly myora) remains one of the few virtually vestigal coral reef areas within the bay. i'm more than happy for it to be left this way so hopefully i can one day take my kids out in the bay and catch fish that have bred and grown in this nursery. suggest everyone check out the proposed map on the EPA website.
