Bangkok and Brunei ?

Sawadee Khap Ray,

Mate I have been to Thailand 7 times for both Uni and personal trips. There are some cool fishing parks there stocked with all sorts of random fish from Pacu to Peacock Bass. I have never seen a great deal of tackle available though... Im sure its there but i tend to hit markets etc as opposed to department stores.

The business class elite of Thailand to be of Chinese extraction so I cant see how the numerous tackle manufacturers would not have established themselves in Thailand as well. I would expect in true Siamese style that prices should be nice and low, and the more you get the lower that price gets :P

As for Brunei, deffinently talk to Kiara Poltergiste. He is living is Malaysia but he is a born and bred Brunie lad. He also has extensive tackle knowledge having worked in and managed tackle stores in SE Asia so he would be an invaluable source of information id say.

Kha on the end of a Sentence is female.

Khap on the end of a Sentence is male. So they way i said it in the greeting to Ray was correct. I didnt travel to Thailand for Uni to study Latin :P

However my grasp of the language has faded a lot over the past 6 years. I can still order a meal and a drink though and ask directions! What more do you need :P

Ray by the way

Fish = Pla

Well i better slap my wife around the head the lol..

She has been teaching thai wrong.. Sorry mate

Na man dont do that.

In a country like Thailand there are loads of dilects.

Kha is pretty much universal for females. But I have heard the male equivilant go from Khap to Khrap. So i dont see why "Krut" would be a dramatic difference.

Just like "Sawadee Khap" for hello.

Up north where there is a heavy Laotian dilalect i here them say "Sawasdee Krap". Subtle as, but when its all new it throws you off a bit.

I was joking mate.... Suwaree just walked pass the pc and saw how you spell it and said... dam frangs... lol

now back on topic

Hahahaha. I have been called that once or twice. Yeah my spelling is blatantly just aiming for the Phonetics. And how screwed up is that. The word "Phonetic" is not spelled "Phonetically"!

And please pass on my "katort khap" to Suwaree.

Or for that matter a good "My ben lai" for a bit of northern dialect "Bop pen young".

Dont worry none of those will get you slapped :P Pm for those ones hahaha.

P.S. Once again the spelling their will be atrocious. Just aiming for the sound outs haha.

hey ray. how's it going. Glad to see you're gonna be on a break. business i'm guessing? But yea, i'm sure you can get some fishing in between. Especially in Thailand- they've got huge payponds there. Fully guided fishing for Pla Buk - Giant Mekong catfish up to 25kg, barramundi (lates calcarifier) up to 15kg, in payponds that charge only around AUD50-100 per day? That's inclusive of guide, bait, tackle, and refreshments the whole day!!! They're all within 2hrs drive of bangkok, so you wont be dragged unreasonably far out of the city. For Pla Buk - Bung Tsang Nam, for barramundi - Chon Buri. I'll dig up some contacts for guides, ponds and the like if you want. about tackleshops, they've heaps of good gear there. Loads of Asian Edition Shimano gear, Asian Edition Fenwick etc. All the way up to JDM stuff like Sevenseas, Megabass and Evergreen too! let me know if you want the contacts. Prices of course, are irresistable, so do be prepared for some serious damage on the plastic :D

About Brunei, you meant Bandar Seri Begawan right? That's the capital city. Hmm, where'll you be staying? I do recommend a few days in The Empire Hotel if you dont mind. 7 star hotel ;). love hanging out there when i'm home. if you play golf, you'll love it too :D http://www.theempirehotel.com

Otherwise the Sheraton is right in town and close to just about everything. Fishing in town is good - we regularly get jacks up to 3kg, barra up to 15kg and GT up to 5kg casting along the waterfront. Do take a trip on the water taxis that ply the river. I'll get my bro to take you around town if you want. town's pretty small, but you might get a kick out of checking out the huge mosques that we have around town - the main 2 mosques have minarets plated with gold leaf. Other than that, the Royal Regalia building is quite interesting, plus the museum as well.

For fishing gear, the shop that you'd be best off going to is my mate's shop - Fred's Fishing Tackle. He's a certified IFGA captain and marshal. Carries Daiwa, Shimano and Ryobi, plus some Japanese Stuff as well - Golden Mean, Carpenter etc. He also runs the famous Bruneian offshore charter - Apollo. Jigging for amberjacks, flame snappers, red emperor and YFT up to 20kg your game mate? ehe. day trips available too, coz the nearest oceanic trench is only a few hrs cruise away. pass me your contact, and i'll set you up with him when i'm back home next week so he'll be expecting you.

Brunei's a small place with no alcohol or clubs, but it's homely place, and in many ways similar to Bris - which is why i love bris soo much... argh, cant wait to get back.!! ehe...fishing is always good. eg popping GTs up to 10kg from shore at the beach, spinning spaniards in from the beach etc, so i'm not complaining. If you like to sail, do look up the yacht club at Serasa. Heaps of ppl head out during weekends.

no worries mate, you'll be properly taken care of in brunei! :D

Thanks for reply Adrian.

We will be staying at the Sheridan Utama from 5th till 8th April as part of a 4day/3 nights package with prearranged activities so wont have time for fishing whilst in Bandar Seri Begawan but I do want to check out the tackle shops.

In Bangkok we will be staying at the Indra from 29th March till 5th april, and if I can slip the legrope and escape from the missus for a day I would like to try for a barra in a pay pond. If you could suggest the names and locations of some tackle shops that would be good also.

Thanks very much for the help.

Cheers

Ray
