Hi all

I havent really fish for barra in aus before. I got a friend who wants to try fishing for barra using bait. Anyone with suggestion on what kind of bait will produce good results on barra besides live bait such as mullet or herring. For mi i usully use lure in the pond .

Generally you catch them yourself using shrimp traps or opera house traps - both available from tackle stores or even BigW/KMart etc.

If you want to buy some then lookup redclaw farms in the phone book. There's a few around SEQ. Some out Greenbank way from memory.

I reckon CrayfishMates might be able to steer you in the right direction;)

Large shrimp are great Barra bait, crayfish are ok, but be aware your not allowed to use redclaw as bait in the southern half of Qld, as they are considered a pest. However if your in one of the dams they are known to be in, and catch them there you should not have an hassles using them. Blueclaw / native yabbies you catch locally are fine. Otherwise if you can berley up what ever feeder fish are there they make good bait as well, ie Mullet, boney bream, gar. Note you cant use nets in fresh water (no tidal flow), so if your fishing a dam you'll need to catch your livies on hooks!
